John served in Vietnam as a Corpsman. After active duty he remained in the Reserves while he pursued a career in Education. He retired from the Navy with over 30 yrs of service as a Master Chief. He retired from his civilian position of NY State School Superintendent in 2010. Just 9 months later he was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma as a result of eating raw or under cooked fish, drinking the water and swimming while in Vietnam. He was declared 100% Service Connected after his death by the VA. He leaves his wife of 37 yrs, and a son and daughter behind.
