About the Authors:

Dr. Ghassan K. Abou-Alfa, and Dr. Eileen M. O’Reilly are both Associate Members of the Gastrointestinal Oncology (GI) Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Associate Professors of Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York.

Dr. O’Reilly received her medical degree at Trinity College – Dublin University – in Ireland, where she was born. She completed her residency training in Ireland and Fellowship training at MSKCC and has been a faculty member in the GI Oncology service at MSKCC since that time. Dr. Abou-Alfa received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, where he was born, and completed his post-doctoral training at Yale University School of Medicine before joining the MSKCC GI Oncology service.

Dr. Abou-Alfa and Dr. O’Reilly met at MSKCC and have been married and working and collaborating together ever since. Their research and clinical activities focus on biliary, primary liver, and pancreatic cancers. Their work focuses on finding novel therapies and improving the effectiveness of current therapies for biliary, primary liver, and pancreatic cancers, while continuing to understand the basic mechanisms of theses diseases and their therapies. They both have many publications in the field.

Dr. O’Reilly is the Chair of the NCI Pancreas Task Force, and Dr. Abou-Alfa is the Chair of the NCI Hepatobiliary Task Force. They are both members of the Alliance GI core committee. Dr. Abou-Alfa is a member of the Scientific Review Advisory Board of the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, heads the Primary Liver cancer sub-group of the Alliance GI Core, and serves as the chair of the International Advisory Board of the Egyptian Society for Liver Cancer. Dr. O’Reilly serves as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Lustgarten Foundation Pancreas Research Consortium and of the Medical Advisory Board of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and ASCO IMT committee.

Dr. Abou-Alfa and Dr. O’Reilly teach and mentor medical oncology fellows (national and international), junior faculty, residents, and house-staff. They are both strong advocates for raising awareness and support for improving the outcome of patients with biliary, primary liver, and pancreatic cancers, and for enhancing oncologic education worldwide.
