Thanks everybody. Charlie’s not itching so bad now. Becky, I did get the pdf from cancercare. There was a lot of good information. Thank you Lisa, and Kristin the peppermint oil sounds good. We appreciate all these great suggestions!

February 8, 2008 at 5:11 pm #19070kristinSpectatorPeppermint essential oil is an aromatherapy remedy for itching, and it helped me a lot. I took a bottle of Intensive Care lotion, poured out the top inch or so, put drops of peppermint oil into the lotion bottle until the smell was really strong (maybe 15 or 20 drops?) and shook it until it was mixed in. It feels nice and cool on the skin and the smell is soothing too.

Thanks, that’s great info!

February 6, 2008 at 5:51 am #19067lisaSpectatorWhen I was jaundiced, it helped the itching to have a fan blowing on me at night. That itching is the most miserable feeling.
February 5, 2008 at 7:02 pm #19066carol58SpectatorThank you all so much!! Peter, his numbers are good. His billirubin is normal and he doesn’t look jaundiced. So maybe this is just some kind of wierd itchy thing. The sprays you both mentioned Marions and Jeff sound good. Stocking up on baking soda and epsom salts Kris. Gonna try them one after another until he gets some relief. He’s starting to have heartburn now probably from the radiation. Just trying a Pepcid type OTC med for that. He can hardly sleep at all at night now and is getting super tired. He’s counting down the days – 9 more days of radiation and Xeloda. Kris, we’ll be seeing Dr. Sanoff in Chapel Hill the end of Feb. for his 3 month MRI. The doctors are fretting over his itching at Baptist (where he goes daily for radiation). They’re starting to worry me. Charlie says he’s just “tired of it all”. It’s in the 60’s here today. I’m going to get him out in the beautiful North Carolina sunshine. Love to all of you.

remember, the search function is a great tool especially when looking for prior experiences, hints and tips. And, there is no prediction as to whether you will ever need to address the “itching” issue as it doesn’t happen for everyone.
Positive thoughts coming your way.
MarionsFebruary 5, 2008 at 3:38 pm #19064grafsjMemberWife Lana has not had severe itching yet. But I gather its a foregone conclusion that she will eventually have this problem. I’m going to tuck away the suggestions in this thread for future use. Thanks all.
February 5, 2008 at 7:49 am #19063devoncatSpectatorI did the baking soda and it helped. Perhaps Epsom salts as well???? Those we used as a child when I had chicken pox to stop the itch. Over the counter cream was also of some benefit. Lots of showers and baths. One time when i was about to lose my mind, my dad, mom and husband each took an area and just rubbed my skin, no scratching, but it was so helpful. i think if the nerve endings are sending some signal to the brain than the itch signal is repressed and that is why showers and rubbing help.

I used solarcaine sunburn spray or Gel. gave me relief enough to get to sleep. I also remember someone soaking in a warm water tub with baking soda. Also warm steamy shower using a soft body brush opens up those skin pores and rinses them out. I personally have the steamy shower first and then apply the solarcaine what a relief. I don’t have itching that often depends on what I eat that get my liver pumping and also cutting back a little on pain meds helps me. Also I find that if I feel like my colon is a little to full, a fleet enama (Insert and Squeeze type) gives me almost instant relief. I don’t do this very often but with pain meds slowing down bowel movements a lot of the time you don’t poop as much as you should even if going on a regular every other day or so. That slow backup allows time for absorbtion in my opinion. Sorry didn’t mean to get so gross with my suggestions. More water drinking helps. There that cleaned it up a little.
Bluntly Yours!

we had tried Eucerin Itch-Relief Moisturizing Spray which gave temporary relief (about 2 hours) from itching. Taking a shower several times per day and especially at night then using the spray seemed to be the most helpful to my husband, at that time. And of course, Ursidol (as Peter mentioned) certainly gave him longer itch-free periods of time.
Hopefully, this is a temporary situation. Thinking of Charlie and you.
MarionsFebruary 4, 2008 at 10:58 pm #19060peterMemberHow are his liver numbers? Particularly the billey. Itching can be caused by jaundice.
It may be worth consulting a GI/Liver specialist. There are medicines they can give for the backup of bile salts, Ursodiol is one, that may help.
Many of us here have tried all kinds of topical help with some varying success. I never got a lot of relief but Bag balm did seem to help.
It’s an unpleasant side effect especially because it can make it impossible to sleep.Hope this is useful,
PeterFebruary 4, 2008 at 10:46 pm #1081carol58SpectatorCharlie started itching pretty much all over a couple of days ago. It bothers him especially at night when he tries to sleep. He’s still having daily radiation and oral Xeloda (3,000 mg daily). Dr. said his blood work today was good. They don’t think it’s from the Xeloda, they’re not sure. Benadryl helps some, but makes him awfully sleepy during the day. I know there was something on here not too long ago about relieving itching. Sorry I can’t find it. If anyone has any ideas why he’s itching and how to get some relief from it. No rash, just itching. Thanks!
