This presentation provides comprehensive information. It answers many of the questions posed by newly diagnosed hilar (perihilar) CCA patients.

    http://cholangiocarcinoma.org/what-patients-need-to-know-about-hilar-cholangiocarcinoma-and-liver-transplant/

    Key points: Hilar (perihilar) Cholangiocarcinoma

Resection is standard of care – surgical removal of tumor

Resection is not possible if disease presentation shows:

Involvement of ducts on both sides of liver

Encasement of main portal vein (relative)

Involving ducts on one side and blood vessels on the other side

Atrophy of one side of liver with involvement of either ducts or vessels on other side

IF STANDARD OF CARE (SURGICAL REMOVAL OF TUMOR) CANNOT BE ACHIEVED
ONLY THEN ARE PATIENTS CONSIDERED FOR THE LIVER TRANSPLANT PROTOCOL

Great presentation answering the many questions we may have. Patients often wonder: why not replace my liver with one free of disease?

The last question was posed by me. It referred to Domino liver transplantation. There are a few hereditary metabolic diseases causing protein deficiency in patients who are then cured with a liver transplant. Their livers can be a viable option for liver transplantations to patients with other diseases i.e. Cholangiocarcinoma. But, as explained in the presentation only those patient livers affected with amyloid polyneuropathy can be considered for a domino liver transplant.
    Hugs,
