I recall one posting only on Surgical Liver Biopsy for diagnostic purpose. It was mentioned that in contrast to non-invasive biopsies, a larger liver mass can be extracted. As far as I remember, an adult non-invasive biopsy sample corresponds to 1/50,000th of the entire liver.

Hello grsharp, I believe when they did my surgery they have a nurse waiting for the removal of the tumor to hand deliver it to the pathology lab while the operation is underway, I believe they decide how much liver to remove at the time the pathology results are sent back, which is right away of course. they remove the gall bladder, and nearby lymph also at this time, good luck, Pat

Has anyone here had to have open surgery to get a biopsy?
How big a deal is it? Dr says wife will have to be in hospital 2-3 days.
