Maria, I can’t get back to sleep so I searched Alaska on our Search site and unfortunately with 2 pages of posts no one mentioned being treated in Alaska. It seems they came to places over here like MDAnderson in Houston, St. Louis Jewish Hospital, Mayo in Rochester MN and Dr. Philip Gold in Seattle WA. at the Swedish Hospital. Another suggestion would be if you could send all LAB and Scan reports somewhere here to get a consult by phone. Again the main thing is to get that pain under control. So glad you are going to find a pain DOC. Please keep us posted,
January 26, 2017 at 7:33 am #93990lainySpectatorMaria, I have a strange idea that may help, at least I hope so. Go to our Search engine at the top of the page and type in Alaska and see if any posts pop up about your area and where you might take your Mom be it a Doctor or a hospital that deals with CC. .

MarionJanuary 25, 2017 at 10:44 pm #93988mariajgbSpectatorThank you both so much for your responses. It was posts on the message board that convinced me she shouldn’t be suffering the way she is. I’ll have her seek out another oncologist when she is able. The emergency room and a pain management doctor are both good ideas, I called a pain management doctor and we’re going to get her set up with an appointment, and I called her oncologist myself to beg him to prescribe her something else. If he doesn’t respond, I’ll take her to the E.R.
Mom’s on Medicare/Medicaid, and she’s about to try Keytruda, so we’re not ready for hospice pain management yet. It feels like we’re having to muddle about on our own with very little guidance or support, which is so frustrating. Thank you very much for your responses, they helped give me direction about where to go.
January 25, 2017 at 7:34 pm #93987marionsModeratorMaria……when the pain gets this bad you may have to look at the option of taking your Mom to the local hospital. Make sure they have all records on hand i.e. everything that pertains to her cancer.
Palliative care includes pain management. Other than the oncologist and perhaps the Primary Care physician, do you have access to a pain management physician? What type of insurance does your Mom have?
Presently, is your Mom being treated with chemo or drugs for this cancer?
Hugs
MarionJanuary 25, 2017 at 4:38 pm #93986lainySpectatorDear Maria, I am so very sorry to read about your Mom’s pain. The best I can suggest to you is to see a different Oncologist. It is his place to make your Mom as pain free as he can. It sounds like he could care less. Sorry, but news like this just gets my goat. With all the different pain MEDs out there he should be trying others. My husband could not take Fentanyl, it did not work for him. He was on Morphine for a few years and it always did the job. In the beginning he even golfed and worked. Of course as he got more sick the dosages were increased but always worked. There is absolutely no reason a patient has to suffer in the way she is. Please see what you can do by getting a new Doctor. Wishing you and your Mom the very best and please let us know how she progresses.
January 25, 2017 at 2:51 pm #12963mariajgbSpectatorHi everyone,
So my mom’s got mets to her lungs and ribs, and in the last two weeks her pain has gotten really very bad. She’s on oxycodone, but she says that if she takes more than two she gets really scary heart palpitations, and two is no longer touching her pain. She’s asked her oncologist repeatedly for a different pain killer, but he just tells her to take more oxy and if she’s having heart problems to go see a cardiologist. I know Fentanyl can be hard on people with liver issues, but any idea why they are so resistant to putting her on low-dose morphine (or something else)?
I’d appreciate anyone weighing in with ideas, or info on how they or their loves ones were impacted by low-dose morphine. Could they still leave the house on their own? What were their mental facilities like?
My mom is in so much pain and she is saying she doesn’t know how much longer she can take it, and I don’t know what to do for her. Any advice would be appreciated.
