Dear CarolE, what a truly wonderful story you have told! You are one of our Miracles and I am going to wish for you to get that transplant. I love your attitude along with the story and I know you are a magnificent “survivor!”
November 19, 2010 at 12:40 pm #26106lulu07SpectatorFloridamom- I’m wondering if I have ever seen u at Dr. Bruckners office I had a successful resection at Mt. Sinai with Dr. Myron Schwartz who is to say the least tremendously talented and wonderful in Jan 10. In March of this year I started 6 months adjuvant chemo with those same cocktails as u I finished them on Aug 18th. Had an appointment with Dr. Schwatz for my 9 month follow up CT end of Oct. all clear. I still go to Dr appointments at Bruckner and have my port flushed by Ling she was my chemo nurse and just such a sweetheart in fact everyone at Bruckner is wonderful. Best of luck to u. P.S. It’s alot easier for me to get to NY as I live in NJ but, I have met people like u who traveled a great distance to be at Bruckner.
NancyNovember 19, 2010 at 12:12 am #26105marionsModeratorWhat incredible, good news. I agree with Katja in that you should post this in the good news section or, the introduction section of this site. This is such an important development and I would be concerned that your thread may become lost.
Congratulations and please, keep us informed.
Best wishes,

I hate to hear of younger people but you and kris are right-buy enough time til a better treatment emerges. Very good luck with the liver transplant. You’ve been through so much already. What chemo have you had-your onc previously followed protocol with a ‘wait and see’ attitude.

There is no standard chemo protocol for CC and my oncologist there felt with 1″ clear margins and no other signs of CC other than the primary tumor that I could just go home and hope there was no recurrence. A year later they found 6 very small tumors on the rt lobe and labeled it metastatic. Same oncologist said I could apply for a clinical trial but essentially told me I had 6 mos to live! With my extended family in the room I stayed calm hoping no physical harm would come to this man since his words were simply unacceptable to my brood. Fast fwd to today I have had one round of Therasphere followed by a year of custom chemo cocktails. My tumor markers are in the normal range and the tumors themselves all showed signs of necrosis with all but 2 essentially dead. I admit its difficult to do chemo every other week (not to mention flying to NYC to do it) but I feel I am too young at 44 and believe I will buy enough time until there are other therapies which can totally eradicate the cancer. Meanwhile I kept searching for alternatives and have since been approved for a live liver donor transplant at Mt Sinai in NYC since there has been no growth or spread (in fact the opposite) so I am praying that I can get a donor qualified. Transplant isnt ideal but most of the newer literature has been positive so I am willing to take a chance. I believe a lot has to do with attitude and since I come from a family full of ppl who love to prove you wrong when you say we cant so I take it as a personal challenge to beat this nasty disease. Good luck in your battle!
PS Howard Bruckner the chemo oncologist has some of the best survival rates among pancreatic and CC patients-he is nothing short of genius…November 7, 2010 at 9:56 pm #26102marionsModeratorKavita….A standard of treatment of adjuvant therapy post resection has not been established therefore, it is left up to the discretion of the physician to either, implent follow up treatment or, not. Also, I am not sure as to what the policy is in Canada.
I don’t know where you are located however, I would like to pass on to you a familiar physican with extensive knowledge of CC.

The trouble we’re facing now is that my mom’s medical oncologist here in Canada has rejected the recommendation from Memorial Sloan Kettering to start the chemo regimen followed by focussed radiation, so we are waiting for the referral to another oncologist. Time is everything and if they don’t move up here in Canada, back to the USA we come asap!November 7, 2010 at 1:37 pm #26100katjaMemberHi Kavita1 and kmiller,
This post is quite old from CarolE but she has posted more recently and had Xeloda after her resection and recurrence – she had posted about good results with Xeloda. I’m not sure what kind of radiation though.
My dad had a successful resection in Jan this year and then completed a trial of Xeloda as adjuvant therapy (in the UK the standard approach after successful resection is to do nothing – wait and see). He tolerated the Xeloda very well and had a clear scan at the end of it. Now we wait and see what the scan shows when he’s been of it for 3 months.
Kmiller did you find any trials that your sister might be eligible for? There is ABC03, which may be recruiting soon?
KateNovember 7, 2010 at 1:02 am #26099kmillerSpectatorMy sister also had a successful resection at MD Anderson w/ recurrence almost immediately following chemo regimen. She is getting ready to start chemo and probably radiation. I’m hoping for some clinical trials somewhere for this very thing. Interested to see/read more from everyone on this subject. thanks!
November 5, 2010 at 3:25 pm #26098kavita1MemberHI there,
My mom also had a “successful” resection very recently, and now they want to start chemo and radiation. May I ask you a question, which chemo and what type of radiation therapy did you have? Thanks
February 5, 2009 at 3:02 pm #1983caroleSpectatorDear people out there,
I am new to the list. I was fortunate enough to have a resection and lymph node removal in August 2007, which were successful in themselves (Sloan-Kettering: exellent surgeon and care). There was follow-up radiation and chemotherapy. However, subsequently, I got tumors in both ovaries which were removed in July 2008, and now there are small metastases in another lymph node and in a lung. We have started chemotherapy again, looking to halt or slow the disease, at least for a time. I am interested in hearing about the course of the disease in people who have recurrences after surgery, to get a better idea of what to expect. Thanks to those of you who maintain this very complete, clear, and helpful list,Carol
