My mother had the itchiness on her arms and face. So bad, she used a mini-hairbrush to scratch. This went on for a couple of years before she was ever diagnosed or darken in skin color. After diagnosis, the M.D.’s suggested it was the bile backup from blocked bile duct. Atarax helped her a lot. I wish I had known about the SARNA. It would have been good to glide it on her skin like a gentle massage. soothing and caring and loving.

Hi Susan-I was diagonsed because of my itching. My bile duct was blocked. I had an ERCP (stent placement). I would demand more blood work to check liver levels. I was never jaundice, just itchy. Lotions only masked the problem. Call your doctor.

It’s been my head that is itchy. It was also my first symptom.

I still have the itching on my hands and feet mostly. Usually relieved by benedryl or the Waldryl, available at Walgreens for half price the name brand stuff. I never leave home without it, as this itching is so intense, the longer it goes , the bigger the bruise I leave in attempting to relieve it. No one can tell me why these pop up , as all my levels are back to normal.

Hi Susan. I recommended the Sarna long ago as Teddy itched so bad when he jaundiced. I do want to tell you that it should not be used longer than say, 10 – 14 days. The other thing that helped was ice bags. Since your mother’s itching seems localized perhaps some cold towels or bags of frozen veggies will help.
As to why not sure. We just know Teddy itched before his surgery as his bile duct was blocked. Good luck.

Susan….hopefully the cream helps. As Cherbourg had recommended, you might want to check the “Search Forum” for information in regards to itching. There have been plenty of discussions in re: to this symptom. Generally, the biliruben is ellevated but, not always is the jaunidice (if present) visible. This is what I have learned and from what I have seen on this board.
Susan, I know that you are PA. Who is helping your Mom making medical decisions presently?

Thank you. I just went out and got the lotion. My mom is giving it a try right now. Do you know what this itching is all about? Why does it happen?

    Susan,

SARNA is a lotion that worked well for my mom. It’s available over the counter. We got it at Walgreens . You can also use the search forum tab at the top and enter itching.

HI. I am hoping that some of you can shed some light. The itching is new for my mother and it is on the tops of her legs. I called the doc and they said her bilirubin levels were normal last time she had labs (3 weeks ago) and to call if it worsens or she itches in other places. They asked if she was jaundiced and she is not. Has anyone had experience with itching? What causes it and what can be done to help?
    Thanks a bunch.
    Susan
