    caroline,

sorry I have just noticed your last message asking about the trial in the UK. The trial is being held at The Royal Marsden.

I am glad that the gemcap is working well for you, here in the UK a gemcap trial on pancreatic patients reported promising results (another Marsden trial).

hope those platelet levels keep rising,

    julies

    Geoff-

Have you been taking aspirin or Ibuprofen? My doctor has cautioned me that these can affect platelets, especially aspirin.

I have been on gemcitabine and capecitabine (Xeloda) and it is working well for me. I have had a couple of weeks with low platelets, but last week they were above normal for some amazing reason.

I know this sounds silly, but I talk to my body. I told my platelets to get back up there. Now I’m working on my red blood cells.

My very best wishes for you,

I had to stop chemo (Gemcitabine + Carboplatin) 6 weeks ago due to low platelets (about 30). My platelets recovered in a few weeks to about 60 and are now stuck at that level (without chemo). But history is that they dive whenever I have chemo. I realise that everyone gets this effect but mine seems particularly severe and oncologist therefore wants to try alternative chemo (Capecitabine alone) which he says should have less impact on platelets.

My bone marrow has been checked and it is ok – making the cells which make the platelets – and oncolgist says that some cancers “gobble up” platelets.

Has anyone else had such an experience ?

    Geoff
