SpectatorAMR:
When my husband Tom has had stents in his liver they also had to be changed out about every three months, to reduce the chance of infection. His current issue is that after his liver resection, a new tumor appeared in the rt. biliary tree and they can’t get a stent in until radiation shrinks the tumor. Remember than no one has an expiration date stamped on the bottom of their feet (or behind their ears!) Never take no for an answer, do the research and ask all the questions you can!
Go with God and KEEP KICKIN that CC!Margaret

MemberLalapes, Gavin, and Lisa, thank you for your information. Some doctors do not give a lot of information so I was in the dark that there are different kinds of stents.
May God bless you.January 9, 2010 at 6:40 pm #34107lisa
SpectatorMy doctor is going to try to insert the metal mesh stent. It depends a lot on the size of the bile ducts and how much the cancer has infiltrated and sqeezed them smaller, from what I understand.

ModeratorHi Rowena,
Yes, like Julia’s sister, that sounds like the same stent that my dad also had inserted and my understanding is that it works in the way in which Julia describes.
My best wishes to you.
Gavin

SpectatorI’m sure that’s what my sister has, Rowena. A metal “mesh” stent which expands and beds in to the wall, keeping everything open & draining? My understanding is they don’t clog easily but, if they do, they’re fairly easy to sort out.
I may be wrong, but I think that’s what she’s got.

MemberHi,
No one has mentioned a mesh wall stent. That is what I have. It is suppose to last 10 months although the doctor told me 7 to 8 months. He said that if it got plugged, he could go in and put another one inside. Has anyone heard of this stent?January 5, 2010 at 2:47 am #34103marions
ModeratorAmr….I am with you on that. Good luck on the exams.
Best

ModeratorHi Amr,
My dad had a metal stent in and his CC was inoperable so I think that is why he had the metal one instead of the plastic.
I hope your dad is feeling okay and good luck with your exams.
Best wishes
Gavin

ModeratorAmr……I agree with everyone. I have been told that metal stents generally are used only if a resection is not contemplated. All stents become clogged although, metal appeares to last a bit longer and can be cleaned out. All stents will clog and can cause infections. We had many discussions regarding stents and the search function provides a great tool for further information. Simply go to “Search Function” or “Google” top of page and type in “stent” and sort through the many comments regarding stents.
Are you prepared for your upcoming exams?
Best,

SpectatorI have plastic stents and an appointment to get them switched out this month, three months after they were put in. It’s precautionary because they don’t want me to get so sick again that I need to be hospitalized.

SpectatorHi Dr. Amr, Teddy had plastic stents that worked fine but his were still changed every 3 months, under a local anesthetic. When his cancer returned 1 1/2 years ago it pushed the right ureter closed and they have to stent that. That was also done every 3 months with plastic. The last time was last May and they now have a metal (J) stent (like titanium) and he only has to have it changed once a year!
