Tommy,
Be careful about the lungs. When you have surgery in the abdomen, a not too uncommon problem can be fluid on the lungs. I found this out the hard way. The fever isnt too high and I was also told not to worry about it after surgery since that can happen. Nice to know we got the same information.Hoping they get Judy comfortable and breathing great. Pass on my best wishes.

June 8, 2010 at 1:04 pm #38839lainySpectatorTommy, sorry to hear about the type of recovery Judy is going through. Just want to say I had surgery last October and the second day I kept hitting that morphine pump and I knew it was not “pumping”. This went on for 4 hours (my nurse did not believe me as the green light would go on when I pumped) and then I called for the floor nurse and sure enough the green light was on when I would hit it but I was getting nothing! You might want to have the floor nurse check out the pump. They replaced the pump and also called the doctor and used a different pain killer and then all was fine. I had the 24 hour spinal which was a godsend. Should she be in that much pain with the epidural? When a patient has had that kind of surgery and is in that kind of pain there is no reason for that and something needs to be done. If you cannot get the nurse to help her then I would put in a call to her doctor as well and talk to someone as high up as you can go at the Hospital. Wishing Judy a good turn today so she can start healing properly.
June 8, 2010 at 12:12 pm #38838tommyMemberLast night was a little ruff for Judy. She’s been running a fever of 100.7, but no one seems to be concerned about it. We’ve even mentioned to the nurses that they’ve been giving her tylenol since Saturday so whey would you have a fever at all if nothing was wrong. We were told that it’s normal for patients to run fevers after a major surgery????? Her oxygen wouldn’t stay above 90 so they had to up it from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2. Which the respitory therapist seemed more concerned about than the nurse. He said that they were suppose to start weening her off the oxygen today…. guess not now. Her lungs also rattle which the nurse said was just because she needed to cough…. well throughout the night the rattle noise got worse and you could tell that finally the nurse was starting to get more concerned because she came in the room more often to listen to her. Judy is very sleepy and yes still seems to be in pain. She’s still on the morphine epidural in her back and the PCA pump that has dillaudid (sp) in it. Yesterday she hit her button for the pump 16 times, not sounding to me like they are gonna be takin’ her off that anytime soon.
Has anyone else experineced any of this after any surgeries?

Here’s hoping that another day has given Judy more strength and little closer to feeling better.Check in when you can, and remember to take care of yourself too.

Hoping that Judy is feeling a bit better today and that she continues to improve. I do hope that the docs manage to keep the pain under control.
My best wishes to you and Judy,

June 6, 2010 at 4:16 pm #38835devoncatSpectatorI remember my first surgery when they weaned me off the drugs. Straight from morphin pump to ibruprofin. When I was crying over the pain and that I needed pain medication and questioning why they took it away, the nurse replied but I was getting pain relief…ibroprofin to which I responded that is what you take for a hangover, not for having half your liver removed.

I have been following Judy’s progress and hope things continue to improve for her. No it is not weird to get excited and hopeful. It’s amazing how our priorities change when faced with situations like this. We realize what is really important in our lives and also what is not. Hoping for the best for you and your family. Take care Tommy.

June 6, 2010 at 1:25 pm #38833tommyMemberAt about midnight last night they finally were able to get her pain under control and she was able to sleep and so were her daughters- they will NOT leave her side. This morning her spirits seem to be better as well and says she really wants to get up and walk, which she hasn’t done yet.
We are a little worried however because again they are talking about trying to take the PCA pump away from her…. or “ween” her off of it. They did that when they moved her from ICU to her room and then she had to play catch up and it was horrible! So, it might be another long day today.
The Dr. has already been in and said that he really feels happy with the way things are going. He also said that we should get the pathology back on her spleen Monday or Tuesday. Is it weird to be exicted about getting those results back ??
Oh, and her platelets are back! YEAH!!!!! Which could mean that in the future she could do more chemo. They haven’t been above 100K since February cause her stupid spleen was hoggin’ them all. Today they were 250K.
June 6, 2010 at 4:11 am #38832marionsModeratorTommy….I am hoping for it to go uphill from here. There is a party waiting to be put in action.
Best wishes,
MarionJune 5, 2010 at 10:32 pm #38831tommyMemberToday has been ruff. Her pain is HORRIBLE and they can’t give her any more pain meds because it will compromise her breathing. However, she is out of ICU and I see that as a positive sign.
So no partying just yet. Her daughters have tried to make her room feel more like home with air freshners that smell like home, butterflys on her window, flowers, her favorite slippers, her favorite blanket and pillow….

June 5, 2010 at 2:44 pm #3629tommyMemberYesterday the dr.’s removed Judy’s spleen. Which they beleive was causing her so much pain. The good news: they “think” that the tumor was all contained in the spleen, not at the base as they orginally thought. YEAH! And the even better news is that while they were removing her spleen they were able to look around and they didn’t see anymore tumors/mets! YEAH!!!! The surgeon said that it appeared that the cancer is all contained to her bile duct and her liver. YEAH!!!! GREAT news! Once she is out of ICU and in her own private room we are going to PARTY!
