    Hi Andie,
According to my radiologist, stents can block even when there is no cancer. It seems that if the bile fluid gets too sticky and viscous it just stays there. Then back pressure in the liver may force it out, or it may require minor surgery to unplug it. But drinking plenty of water keeps it fluid (and is good for you anyway!).
Best wishes to you and your mom,
    Andy

Andie…I hope for your Mom to have a better day. There is much to learn about this cancer and much that has not yet been discovered. We had been told that occlusion of the stent generally is caused by natural causes such as stone fragments or blood clots or other debris normal to the body. Stents also can migrate. Also, at times, the stent can kink during insertion. Stents are a necessary for biliary drainage when the real thing fails. Not exactly the same, but a fairly good replica with a few issues.
Best wishes are coming your way,
    Marion

    Thanks Gavin

That has helped clear things up for my Mom. She had a bad day yesterday, bumped into a few people who where asking too many questions, some she couldn’t answer.

    Best Wishes

My Mom has asked me a question that I can not answer and I wonder it anyone on this wonderful site can.

How come the stents block, if it’s not tumour related? Why is it our bile manages to flow through our bile ducts and people with a stent get blocked. Shouldn’t the stent act as a bile duct and therefore the bile flow through?

    Thank you
