Ray, that is really great that the surgeon feels confident in your doing your oncologist for your treatment and not needing to go back to him for 9 months.
I took Xeloda, but never had radiation. My regimen was to have an infusion of Oxaliplatin and then start taking Xeloda the next day. I would have one infusion, then take Xeloda for 2 weeks, then have a week off of all meds. I did this for 4 cycles (if I remember right). Since I was taking Oxal. and Xeloda at the same time, it gets a little difficult to determine which side-effects were for which med, but I had a service that would check in on me while I was taking it. They said the side-effects could be extreme diarrhea and the hand-foot syndrome where your skin dries out, turns red and peels.
My side-effects were actually counteracted a little by the Oxalyplatin in that Oxal. caused constipation, and then the Xeloda was known to cause diarrhea. The first week I started I had slight constipation, then as I got further away from the infusion of Oxal., my constipation turned more toward the diarrhea without ever getting too bad. I was instructed to use moisturizer on my hands and feet many times a day to hopefully prevent the hand-foot syndrome. I never had a problem with it and did moisturize frequently.
As far as I know, those were the only side-effects I had from Xeloda. I had other issues with the Oxalyplatin that were very specific to that.

MarionI have only taken Xeloda 6 days and taken the corresponding 6 days radiation. Did you have any side affects? and how long did you use the Xeloda?
Good news is my surgeon appiontment yesterday was a 9 week post op follow and he doesn’t want to see me back for 9 months. He said the onocologist/hematologist and radiologist physician will keep him informed and take good care of me through the course of my treatment. I’m still feeling very good.

Well done on such a speedy recovery after a whipple. Your weight seems to be heading in the right direction which is impressive considering the effect that a whipple has on your whole digestive system. I had a whipple on the 13th of May last, recovery is going very well, I’ve regained most of the weight and I’m now waiting the results of my latest scans to check if the cancer has spread. These results will inform the next course of treatment.Good luck and keep in touch.

Welcome to the site and thank you for sharing your story with us all. Sorry that you had to find us but I am glad that you joined and shared your experiences with us all. I am glad to hear that you have put on some of the weight you lost pre surgery and also glad to hear that you still have a good appetite. My dad also used the Ensure drinks when he came out of the hospital and they seemed to work for him.

Hello Ray and welcome to our site. Thank you for sharing your success with us. You are an example of what had been presented at a major medical conference I had attended. It had been advised that patients of all ages including, those at a more advanced age should be considered for treatment options based on their physical presentation rather; than being excluded due to their chronological age. And, here you are a living proof for that. What type of radiation treatment are you undergoing? Given that you are working part time, I must assume that your energy level is fairly high.

MarionI am age 77 and had whipple surgery on 5/10/10 for bile duct cancer.
Fortunate was caught very early. I started Xeloda on 7/22/10 and am taking radiation treatment for 6 weeks along with the Xeloda.I have gained back 10 of the 30 lbs lost prior to surgery and have a good appetite, just can’t eat as much as I used to, so supplement with Ensure several times a day.
I feel good and returned to work after 7 weeks, working part time as a design engineer.
