Roxy, my Dad is 79 too. Just find someone who knows how to deal with this nasty disease. For us, we also wanted someone as aggressive as we felt! Use the resources and experiences of people here….they are a Godsend!
Best wishes to you and your family
Janet
December 16, 2010 at 1:20 pm #45611lainySpectatorRoxy, before Teddy had his Cyber Knife they had to use radiation to bring the tuor fro 7 down to 6. All went well except for some tiredness during the radiation period.
December 16, 2010 at 2:50 am #45610marionsModeratorRoxy…….Did you make an appointment with Ghassan K. Abou-Alfa, MD or one of his team members?
Until others may respond to your question re: Sloan you might want to use the CC google search function (top, right) where you will be able to peruse numerous discussions.
Best of luck and please, keep us posted.
Best wishes,
MarionDecember 16, 2010 at 2:05 am #45609roxyMemberForgot to respond to the question as to where her tumor is located – it is in the caduet ? I’m sure I have it wrong. They did mention cyber knife, but size is currently too large for that. So, we are trying to shrink it first, and we have conflicting advice: some dr.s say embollization and some dr’s say i.v. chemotherapy. Even in the chemotherapy dept. we have conflicting info – some dr’s say to try gemzar and oxaliplatin; other dr’s say just the gemzar. I am so scared we will make the wrong decision! Which is why we are going in to Sloan in January. Any advice would be much appreciated….. Thank you all !
December 16, 2010 at 2:00 am #45608roxyMemberThank you for your warm welcome ! My mom is scheduled to meet w/ a medical oncologist at Sloan Kettering in NYC in early January. Does anyone have any info. about the folks there ?
December 15, 2010 at 4:55 am #45607snezzieMemberMari — I have seen 6 Oncologists in the SF Bay Area and I must tell you that of those 6 doctors, Dr Alan Venook is the only one who does have experience and a detailed knowledge of CC.
I would recommend him with complete confidence.
There is also a Dr Andrew Ko @ UCSF, a colleague of Dr Venook that I have heard very good things about.
Even if you like the doctor that you have the appointment with, PLEASE do get a second and even a third opinion.
I have done quite a lot of research and knowing what I know now
if I had it to do over again–in all of California–I would have gone to UCSF. Definately.
Please keep us informed , Mari.Snezzie
December 14, 2010 at 11:58 pm #45606marionsModeratorHello and welcome to our site. So sorry that you had to find us. Dr. Venook at UCSF is very familiar with this disease. Once in the UC system, consultations with a surgeon, or radiologist will be accommodated. Please, let me know if I can be of any help.
All my best wishes,
MarionDecember 14, 2010 at 11:02 pm #45605mariSpectatorI’m 63 and newly diagnosed. have a 10 cm tumor in my liver; but the primary is CC – but I probably won’t see the oncologist until Monday. Any specialists in the northern CA region?
December 14, 2010 at 10:59 pm #45604lainySpectatorDear Roxy, welcome to our wonderful family. May I ask where the tumor is located? Also where do you hail from? Depending where the tumor is located has anyone suggested Cyber Knife. You would need radiation to bring it under 7cm then Cyber knife is usually just 3 treatments. It is a miracle. My husband had it 3 years ago. Please keep us posted.
December 14, 2010 at 8:23 pm #4480roxyMemberMy 79 yr. old mom is recently diagnosed w/ CC and we have seen several doctors with various recommendations: embollization, intravenous chemo. Am wondering if anyone has any advice re: either treatment option. Her tumor is 7 cms. Am grateful to have found this website, and would welcome any help. Thank you and god bless.
