    Lainy — That is a good suggestion. I think i still have my old mini-tape recorder from college that I could have them use. Sometimes i know they don’t want to share with me all of what the drs say (you know how protective parents can be), but maybe i can convince them to at least share that q&a info with me. :)

    Hello Gracefulmeadow and Congratulations on your wedding and the GrandBaby’s birth, a lovely way to have ended 2010. Teddy never had fluid but I do have a suggestion for mom and dad’s doctor visits. Perhaps they could take along a recorder then play the visit back for you so you know exactly what is going on. Good luck on the Scan results!

    ziggydog – i dont this my dads fluid buildup happens so often that he needs a drain “installed” yet, but it may be something we have to look into in the future. good to know its another idea to through out there. I’ll definitely have them ask the drs about if there’s cancer in the fluid. I didn’t even think of that!

    Gavin – i only get bits and pieces from my mom about what the drs say at his appointments because i work during the day about 1.5 hours from where he goes – so i rarely get to tag along and ask the questions. I’m going to pass on those questions to my mother and hopefully they’ve already answered them and it just wasn’t passed onto me.
    And yes, i believe my dad is still on diuretics from the beginning of his diagnosis in the spring, but i’ll have to confirm with him.

    Hi Graceful,

    I hope you have a great 2011 as well! Glad to hear that your dad has finished his first 3 months of 5-FU and I will keep my fingers crossed for some good results for him when his scans come back on Wednesday and please let us know how they go for him.

    As to the fluid build up, were you able to speak with his doctors about this, and if so, what did they say? It could be ascites and this is quite common with CC. Here is a link that may be of interest to you.

    Is your dad taking diuretics of any kind right now? I am hoping for some good news for your dad so that you can both move on to the consultation with the Yale surgeon.

    Hi – My husband was diagnosed in July and began retaining fluid sometime in Sept/Oct. He has been drained 5 times – each time they took out no less than 11 liters. Today he had a permanent catheter put in so he can drain himself at home. He fills up at about the rate of 1.5 liters a day. I don’t have an answer in terms of why this happens but something to have the doctors check is if the cancer is in the fluid. Two weeks ago we found out thru an MRI that cancer cells are in the fluid. Good luck and congrats. on your marriage. – Sarah

    Hi all! Hope your holidays were fantastic and we’re hoping for a good 2011 :)

    2010 was an awesome and tough year – I got married, my sister had her baby (my dad’s first grandchild!) on December 14th (a little girl!). However, my dad was diagnosed with CC in May…but he is still here, which is the great thing! :) I want to be able to say the same thing many years to come.

    So, my dad has finished his first (3 months or so) of 5-FU (or FU-5…can’t recall the order of the name) and had a Catscan this past Friday. He should be getting the results back on Wednesday so wish us luck :) I’ll let you know how it goes.

    However, he was retaining a lot of fluid in his belly. They drained it this morning and it was 4 liters!!! The only other time this has happened was when he was first diagnosed and the cancer wasnt being fought by chemotherapy.

    Can anyone help me understand why this fluid gets retained and if it is possibly tied to a progression of the disease or if it is just linked to something else? We’re really hoping for good news with this most recent scan…Praying it is good so taht we can go onto a PET scan and possibly a consultation with the surgeon at Yale if its good enough!!!
