Walter Peyton did wonders for the IL Organ Donation Awareness program!!Just read about another football player, James(Mad Dog) Mandich (tight end with Miami Dolphins) died at 62 in May 2011 from CC.

    Hi Percy,

“The only regret that all the Chicago Bear Fans had was that Payton did not given a chance to score a touch down during the Superbowl title game in 1986;instead of Payton, the “Refrigerator Perry” given the chance because of his size”

Well said, couldn’t agree more! I read McMahon’s book years ago and he says the same things about Payton. And as you say also, Ditka also regrets not giving Payton these chances in Superbowl XX. I’ve heard him say that in quite a few interviews. I’m sure I also saw an interview with Ditka where he talks about a team (Cowboys?) getting some player, not a FB or a RB going in from the 1 yard line against the Bears and that is where he got the idea to use Perry in that situation as well. For us in the UK, football only started back in the very early 80’s when they started showing it on TV here. We got hooked on it and Walter Payton is much loved by fans of all teams here. Go Bears!!!

    Hi,All,
As a Chicago Bear Fan,The only regret that all the Chicago Bear Fans had was that Payton did not given a chance to score a touch down during the Superbowl title game in 1986;instead of Payton, the “Refrigerator Perry” given the chance because of his size. Payton was so loved by his team mates that, according to the Punky QB-Jim McMahon,he disobeyed the coach and changed one play himself to allow Payton to break the record to become the running back of all time in the 1985-1986 season. Coach Ditka later even regreted that he did not give the chance to Payton to score the touch down in the Superbowl.
Payton was indeed well loved by his fans . I only knew he died of liver cancer instead of CC. at the age of 46.
    God bless.

My first ever football jersey was Payton’s 34, I got that and my first football as a Christmas present from my mum and dad in 1985. I started playing football in winter 86 when I was 15 and was given my first own jersey, #76. Played centre and nose tackle and that football from my dad came in very handy, he spent hours with me whilst I practised my shotgun snaps! Happy day’s indeed!!

    Hugs,
