Yes, Margaret, I was given a list of “call if any of these things happen” items. The biggest reason to call, is of course, any temp of 100.5 or more. Because I don’t have a colon, I was told to call if I experience unusual activity in the bowels (mine are always different than normal folks :0)). I did start getting extremely gassy (not a real word) and I knew immediately what that meant. I am always at risk for getting a bacterial overgrowth inside the bowel so I called on that and told them what the gastro doc does, and they went along with that and prescribed some Flagyl to knock down the overgrowth. Within a day you could see a big difference. Certainly didn’t want that to get out of hand with lowering blood counts. This week is going so much better leading up to the 2nd round. I was out last evening shoveling road base (dirt and gravel mixture) in front of the barn.
Lainy, we have quite a cute little petting zoo here for the grandkids. Horses, dogs, chickens, and a couple of pygmy goats. They are a delight to just sit and watch.

My husband Tom just started on Chemo again, this time rather than Gem/Cis he is on 5-FU ‘push’ where they push a good amount of the chemo in 1/2 way into his two hour infusion of medication to protect his kidneys. The ‘push’ is over a time frame of 10 minutes.
Two days later he was feeling the effects and was pretty tired…today 4 days later he is experiencing all the same symptoms as you. Feels tired, nausea, flu like type symptoms, body aches, etc.
He has a call into his doc and they’ll probably have him come in for blood counts as his ‘nadiar’ score may be getting low and he may need a blood transfusion. He needed a few of those when he was on Gem/Cis as well.
Does your oncologist want to know anything unusual happening with you? Like sores in the mouth, fever over 100, sore muscles, vomiting, nausea, tiredness, etc. like they do with Tom?
I say just get on that Mustang and ride it for all it’s worth! Go with God and KEEP KICKIN’ THAT cancer.

MarionDear Byron, thanks for the good update. I am glad the effects didn’t last too long and you got to make up for it with the Farm animals. That sounds interesting! Keep on treking and feeling good.
Well, I passed through the 2nd infusion and the week following that was a little rougher than the 1st. I stayed home from work 2 days that week. Just could not shake the flu-like feeling……achy body, headache, very tired. This past weekend was wonderful, though. I was able to go to the football game and get things done around the mini animal farm. The weather was picture perfect as well, which always helps.
Byron….anticipating the first of everything always is accompanied by anxiety. Now that this is behind all others will go smoother yet. The great news is that you were able to stay on top of the side effects.

MarionYea! You did it and now fearless as you approach the 2nd sitting! Teddy nor I have ever had chemo but I am thinking as your treatments go on that the effects may lessen? I bet you just hated watching all that football! Good luck tomorrow, I will be thinking of you!
Thought I would update the board (my friends) on how I did my first week following my first treatment with Gem/Cis.
Everything went well with the infusion. They actually put 2 IV’s in me, and extra for all the extra magnesium/calcium/potassium they were pumping me with. I got a lot more than most people do because I don’t have a colon and they wanted to be sure my tank was full for the cisplatin, and they said if I just use the 1 iv, it would take a lot lot longer. (it was plenty long anyway). That was Friday. Saturday/Sunday I was just really tired. I got lots of football watching done on tv ’cause I was too tired to attend in person. Then, Sunday night, the flu-like symptoms hit….ferocious headache and aching body. I stayed home from work Monday, but that condition only lasted about 12 hrs, been moving uphill ever since. During the week there were 5 or 6 times when my stomach started to feel “weird”, so I quickily popped a pill and it went away. All in all, a lot better than I expected. Now, it’s infusion number 2 tomorrow. Not nearly as nervous this time.

Nothing wrong with you getting nervous, I would be too. Look at it this way though, now you get your chance to fightback and stick the boot into all of these cells! Onwards and upwards, and go get em’!! I hope it all goes well and please let us know how you get on.

Byron….you are entitled to be nervous. Just think of how these darn, minute, cancer cells will be in for something now.

MarionThanks, Lainy, Marion, Gavin, and Peggy. I’ve been real strong and positive but you know, the last 24 hrs have kind of made me nervous. Ah well, onward and upward. I’m at work for a few hrs this morning before heading up the hill to the Cancer center. Any Lainy, as a boy, my first love of football came from Vince, Bart Starr et al……… Go cheese heads. My brothers were all Cowboys fans but I was different. :0)

I hope your treatment goes well tomorrow; my husband takes gem/cis/avastin. Other than low counts, he has had no problems with this regimen. We go tomorrow for results of his latest scans which were Monday. I will keep you in my prayers, PeggyP

Of course it was Teddy, he is watching out over all and that was always his nature. Glad I was on the good side of his nature!! LOL Heck, he has a long table filled with Italian food. In fact, Jen’s Dad, the day before he passed had dreamed of a beautifull table waiting for him. How’s that grab you? But today? Today is last game between his Brewer’s and Diamondbacks. Of course having been out here 16 years I do think his allegiance moved to the D Backs. Now the Packer’s, well that’s something else, that will never change especially since he now watches with Vince Lombardi drinking ‘heavenly beer’!
