If swelling of the legs is the only problem, then you will be fine. Some oncologist add mannitol to the GEM/Cis regimen for the purpose as a diuretic., but others don’t.
Normally around the 6th or 8th doses of GEM/CIS, you will know whether you can continue the regimen or not since the accumulative toxicity of the regimen will tell whether your body can tolerate the regimen or not. if not, then GEMOX will be a less toxic regimen than GEM/CIS with regard to the kidney. GEMOX is a better tolerated regimen,but neuropathy is one of the side effects for GEMOX.

I’ve only had two rounds of gem/cis but am hoping I can tolerate it for at least six rounds, when the doctor will do another CT scan.
Can you advise me as to the side effects that make it difficult to tolerate gem/cis? So far I’ve only had the issue of the swollen legs due to the hydration for the cisplatin.

I think if the GEM/CIS systemic chemotherapy works , and if you can tolerate the regimen, then you should continue .
I personally do not believe stats when I read the medical articles; I just want to know how the articles can help me and others down the road to improve our odds for better treatment plans.
You still have other therapy like targeted therapy agents and immunotherapy agents and clinical trials you can join to fight this disease and that is why I read the articles when I am in situations where I need those information to provide a better understanding of my CCA.
I am fine(stable), but I will continue to research and test the knowledge that I have learned by having this disease.God bless.
Hi Mary, I just had my second dose of Cis/Gem Thursday and I know what you mean about feeling better I also have a tumor on the liver, artery involvement, mets. I also am surprised at how much better I feel. It will be interesting to see how we both do on this chemo combo. I am so happy you and I feel good today! Sincerely, Patricia
Thanks Percy. This is a very interesting article with the possibility of seeing results up to a year. Also can be not so good results too. My SBRT that I had in May of this year – 5 treatments – does not seem to have helped me but I’m wondering if it could possibly start working later on. Right now, due to significant tumor growth in my liver and lymph nodes around the celiac/hepatic arteries, I’m on gem/cis regimen. Just had my second one this last Friday and I have to tell you the stomach swelling has gone down and I’m feeling much better. Seems surprising with only two treatments but I know what I feel and it’s good!!! Maybe it’s a combination of the chemo and the power of prayer. I do have a lot of people praying for me and I do believe in the power of prayer and positive thinking.
