I have heard of similar “double resections”, for lack of a better terminology. Praying for shrinkage then quick regeneration for your mom.December 4, 2013 at 9:57 pm #77671marionsModeratorJules…just wanted to chime in and send tons of loving wishes your way.
Hugs,

December 4, 2013 at 8:30 pm #77668lainySpectatorHi Jules,,,Big shot, long shot, small shot, all good news to me. Any shot will do!
So now we wait just 2 months, time to enjoy your Christmas with family and we will keep the prayers going, even the shooting star will help. Excellent news.December 4, 2013 at 6:40 pm #77667jules1982MemberThanks Kris. I think he said that there’s not currently enough healthy liver to do the resection, so he is going to take the part of the liver that is the healthiest, cut out the small tumour in it, then grow more healthy liver tissue, so that there is enough to support mum whilst the rest of her liver regenerates. Would that make sense?
He said that it would take ten days or so for enough healthy tissue to grow, so that he can then get on with the big op! All sounds a bit scary, but we’ll have to put our faith in his hands, if it comes to that!
December 4, 2013 at 6:35 pm #77666gavinModeratorThis is excellent news for your mum Jules! I’m well chuffed for her and thanks for sharing that with us all. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for more reports of stable and then the surgery being able to be done too.
My best wishes to you and your mum,
Gavin
December 4, 2013 at 6:22 pm #77665kris00jSpectatorWow, Jules! What great news!! The first surgery is maybe some sort of embolization, to block off and kill the diseased part of the liver. Does that sound right? Although I don’t think most of them are “big” surgeries. He might have another idea, too.
How exciting to have the possibility of resection! Keeping my fingers, toes, and eyes crossed for good news!!December 4, 2013 at 6:05 pm #9206jules1982MemberWell, I just thought I’d share that we had a good meeting with the surgeon today. To recap, my mum has stage 4 ICC, with one very large tumour and a few satellites. She’s currently on chemo, and so far, the tumours have been stable. We’d initially been told that the tumours were inoperable but after finding a brilliant surgeon, we now have hope for surgery.
Our surgeon has said that if Mum’s tumours remain stable for another two months on chemo, then he will attempt to resect He said that there will be two big ops, one to try to grow the healthy part of the liver and another to cut away 80% of the diseased liver.
He’s been very honest about recurrence rates etc but he thinks that this is my Mum’s best chance of having a few more years, and if a miracle happens, the tumours may stay at bay for a long time. He said that he has one patient, with stage 4, who had a resection, and is now three years out, with no recurrence as yet! Wow!!!
It’s all a bit of a long-shot at the moment but we have hope and that’s making us smile for today.
Hugs to all,
Jules -
