Dear Lizzy I am glad you cleared that up about the pain but it sounds like no 2 Doctors can agree to what should be done for follow up care. When my husband had his Whipple 8 years ago 5 different ONCs/Rad men all agreed no chemo or radiation. He just saw his ONC every 3 months with LABS and CT Scans. But that was 8 years ago. Its a hard decision to chemo or not. How old is your Dad? Teddy was in his 70’s. I am hoping others will chime in here and give you some ideas. Wishing you the best and remember any decision that is made is the right one.
January 20, 2014 at 1:30 pm #78826lizzycfSpectatorDad visited another radiation oncologist and a hepatobiliary surgeon today. Both them diagnosed as radiation enteritis and intestinal adhesion, which is the same as our surgeon. They have admitted Dad to be inpatient in pain branch. It seems will take a long time to cure this radiation side effect. Even, they don’t know whether their plans will work or not.
Also, I am very confused by surgeons and oncologists. Since Dad was diagnosed and received whipple operation, we have received various post surgery treatments advice from different specialists. In general, they are:
1. No need to take post surgery treatment
2. regular intravenous chemo+radiation
3. oral chemo drugs+radiation
4. oral chemo drugs+target drugs+radiation
5. regular intravenous chemo
6. oral chemo drugs
7. radiation onlyAnd, Dad is receiving therapies in China. A lot patients and their families who have the same disease as Dad are a kind of resistant to chemo/radiotherapies. I am just wondering who can tell me which is the right road we should take. Is it correct or incorrect to take these therapies? Hopefully, the positive impact of what we have done is bigger than the side effects.
January 19, 2014 at 3:04 pm #78825lainySpectatorLizzy, I am so sorry but I have to say this…..I cannot recall on here ONCs or Surgeons asking a patient to just put up with the pain. When is the end of therapy? Has this Surgeon treated CC before? With all the pain relievers we have no one should have to suffer like your Dad. Can you bring in someone else to take a look? Best of luck!
January 19, 2014 at 8:28 am #78824lizzycfSpectatorHi PCL1029, thanks for your reply. I have just consulted with a surgeon, he didn’t recommend other treatments, but just continue using pain reliever. He thinks the side effect will gradually disappear along with the end of radiotherapy. However, sometimes the pain reliever doesn’t work well on my Dad. And the analgesic has some influences on liver function. It has been almost one month in hospital, but no alleviation of the pain. Any suggestion about the pain management?
January 16, 2014 at 10:52 pm #78823pcl1029MemberHi,
Sorry ,I do not know the answer. But can you ask the surgeon “is it possible to remove the edema content( ie: water or bile) using a needle through the skin.
Please remember ,I am not a doctor buy just a patient like your dad.
God bless

January 16, 2014 at 7:00 am #78821marionsModeratorLizzy….continue to put out this question on this board. Someone should come around and share their personal experience re: radiation induced edema.
Please, those that have some additional input for Lizzy be so kind and chime in.
Thanks much,
Hugs,

Thanks for your advice. We have been working with a couple of oncologists through this time. Dad has been given some intravenous medication daily. Just no effect so far. I am going to visit another oncologist and our surgeon for alternative opinions. Hope to get some effective plans.

January 16, 2014 at 2:13 am #78819lainySpectatorHi Lizzy, I have to ask if you have contacted the ONC? My husband had a Whipple and had some problems healing but not like this. He did not have radiotherapy but I am wondering if this could be from the Whipple? No one needs to suffer that way anymore with all the Meds out there for pain but first I would think the ONC needs to see if something is wrong inside. This is especially hard as your Dad is using all his strength to fight the pain. Best of luck. Perhaps some else will come along with more suggestions.
January 16, 2014 at 1:55 am #9411lizzycfSpectatorHi All,
My Dad was diagnosed as bile duct CA and received Whipple surgery on 06/13. After that, he took 5 courses chemo (Gemcitabine+oxaliplatin) and 1 IMRT (28 times) as post surgery adjuvant therapy. However, it has been about 2 months after all the above therapies, my Dad feels intense pain in upper right abdomen. The enhanced CT scan indicates duodenal edema caused by the radiotherapy as the primary inducement for the pain.
Does anyone have any experience with radiotherapy side effect? Does it a normal side effect or not? I am very anxious about this situation. It has been 2 months and no alleviation so far. My Dad takes pain relievers to alleviate pain. And he cannot eat as normal, only a little bit liquid diet. Otherwise, he feels strong painful. BTW, the blood test and CT test show no solid tumors.
Appreciate for any comments or advice!
Lizzy
