Duke…fantastic news on the positive response to the treatment and decrease in regards to the neuropathy. All looks great. Congratulations.

CT scan showed liver tumor still decreasing. Continuing with gemcitabine only. Neuropathy in toes definitely decreased. Platelets are still hovering 100,00 to 130,000 – just high enough to allow full dose of gem.

Onc’s Plan B will be to change to Folfox if/when gem is no longer effective.

Plan C will be to look for a Phase 1 trial.

Duke…..Chemotherapy is very difficult on the body hence, your platelets having been low. I believe that physicians look at the overall response to the drugs and weigh this against possible kidney damage and tumor resistance to the chemotherapy. ( For the later, a switch to other agents may be recommended.)
Your physicians approach is not unusual. I hope that others will come forward and share their thoughts with you as well.

I have had eight rounds of carboplatin/gemzar. My Onc is changing it to gem only for two rounds to take stress off kidneys. Will get a CT scan to check response. She feels we can always go back if the results are not positive.

Has anyone had this change? What were the results? How did you determine if kidneys were responding? Did you continue or go back to original chemo plan? How fast can CC respond to a change in treatment? Anything else of note?

Thanks in advance for your responses.
