Bile leakage can cause irritation on the skin. You would want to make sure to clean the area fastidiously. We have also seen drains shifting from its original placement; you would want to check into this as well. Hoping for things to be sorted out real soon.

They can take a swab of the discharge/pus coming from the drain sites. That will show what infection is present and what antibiotics will/won’t be effective against the infection.

I don’t really have an answer for you, but I know from my personal experience that the bile drains and infections go hand in hand. I’ve not had some of the symptoms you describe, but I kept getting infections in the tubes (at least once getting into my whole bloodstream). I spent most of February in the hospital because of that.

Has your mom’s oncologist brought an infectious disease specialist on board as part of the “team.” Mine did and I thought it was really important. I’m taking IV antibiotics, which I can administer to myself via picc line. Since getting on them, I’ve quit running fevers and haven’t had the infection issue.

Just a thought to see if that would help your mom.

Also, she did have an incident where she forgot her bags were connected and woke up to go use the restroom; bags were full of bile, gravity came into the picture and it was not pretty. She’s been in contact pain after that.

Her CARBOHYDRATE ANTIGEN 19-9 is around 3,500 everything else seems normal? I don’t know why the number keeps increasing.

    Hi Everyone,

I had a question and wanted to you some insight, mom has been having a slight pus discharge around her drains. We had blood work and urine done and there are no signs of infection. Her total bil number is 3.1 so slightly high. My question is she’s in pain where her drains are and want to start antibiotics, catather is draining well to the bag.. can someone have an infection even though the white blood count is normal? Urine does show elevated bilirubin.

    Thanks!!!
