Theresa: In my husband Tom’s case after his re-occurance after his left liver resection, we delayed treatment but were able to get 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinoins all within a week and treatment started about 2 weeks later.
I got him into Marshfield by presenting to the ER and we had an appointment within 2 days with an oncologist. During that 2 days we called him PCP and he got an appt with the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic in Green Bay were we live for that Friday and we took a road trip to Milwaukee to meet with his original surgeon. The luck of the draw? A guardian angel? We will never know but it all got pulled together pretty quickly for Tom
Even while in treatment, you have the right to consult with other doctors and move your care to another doctor – remember YOU are paying THEM!
Go with God and KEEP KICKIN’ THAT cancer.

I started chemo and radiation and sent my papers to several surgeons to get second opinions while I was having treatments. It turned out, they all agreed that I was not a candidate for surgery. I had one doctor that told me that you can stop anytime if you do not like the way it is going and if you think it would be better for you to go elsewhere.
I had my first round of chemo with one doctor but as soon as that cycle was over, I started seaching, again, and this time I am going to a different oncologist.
Best wishes.

Good luck and best wishes,

January 27, 2011 at 2:49 am #47179nur1954SpectatorMichelle – My son was diagnosed in early November and did not start any treatments until January. We reviewed many options before he started chemo treatments. However, I don’t see why you couldn’t start some treatment and still seek other opinions. I think most doctors understand that with this diagnosis, everyone is entitled to many opinions. Good luck – Nancy
January 27, 2011 at 2:35 am #4677mydadSpectatorI’ve seen lots of posts about getting 3rd opinions and even more. If so, do you wait on starting treatment? While trying to get my dad in for a second opinion, we were highly discouraged from starting any sort of treatment before meeting with a second doctor (at Mayo, U of C, etc). Since it would have been at least a three week wait to get into Mayo, I find this kind of strange. We luckily were able to get in within a week to the University of Chicago so we waited on rad/chemo. I still feel like we have gotten a slow start. Those of you who have gone other places, have you already had chemo or radiation? Would it be possible for him to go get a third opinion after he’s started chemo? Also, has anyone gone to University of Chicago for this?
THanks,
Michelle -
