    Hi Julia,

Thanks for the update on Susan, and I’m glad to hear that her GP has referred her to the onc and that she has an app next Monday instead of in November.

My dad also had a metal stent and back in April of last year, he was having problems that sound pretty much the same as Susan is having right now. He had the yellowing of the eyes back, urine had changed colour and he was in a bit of pain and was also sleeping an awful lot. He got an emergency app with a GP and he contacted the hospital but they didn’t admit him. He saw his specialist very soon after that, had blood tests and a CT scan and the results came back good, no spreading or blockage of the stent that could be seen. And the jaundice cleared up just as suddenly as it had came on, so we also put that down to a sludgy stent that had sort of just unsludged itself.

As Marion has said, stents can be cleaned out or second smaller stents inserted into them. I think it might be Andie’s dad that had that done quite recently if I recall correctly.

Please let us know how Susan gets on on Monday and I will keep my fingers crossed for some good news.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Gavin

    Hi Julia
Having been able to study the contents of the dreaded bag for weeks I developed a horrified fascination for the gunk & ‘fur’ that seemed to build up in the inlet area – I would be quite convinced it would block & then it would clear again a few hours later. this must be what happens insode the stents.
Hope Sue gets some joy from her appointment on Monday – I’ll keep everthing crossed for then.
    Love to you all xxx

Many, many thanks for your replies. I printed them off for my sister & she was much reassured. Yesterday, she took them to her GP (who’s constantly doing tests on Susan for UTIs & constantly finding no evidence that her symptoms – & accompanying pain – might be caused by one). As a result, the GP has referred her back to the Onc & she has an appointment next Monday. She’s gone to have her bloods taken this afternoon, so they’ll have the results in time for her appointment.

Yes, Marion, you’re right – she does have a metal stent.

She asked me to thank you all for her, too.

    Julia :-)

Julia, Teddy’s stent never got clogged however, the Oncologist ordered a change every other month. Glad to hear that other than that your sister is doing so well. Just wht we like to hear!

Julia….I recall your sister being fitted with a metal stent. Although, plastic stents are much more prone to clogging in a much shorter time span metal stents also accumulate sludge. Some members reported of a “cleaning” of the metal stent with a rotor rooter type procedure whereas, others spoke of a second metal stent inserted in to the existing stent. There also has been mention of a plastic stent inserted in to the metal stent. Stents serve a great purpose however, as most things they are not unproblematic. Metal stents however, have a much better shelf-life (so to speak) than the plastic version. I would push for an earlier appointment. Your sister will feel tons better.
    Best wishes,
    Marion

Julia: It’s been awhile since Tom has had an internal stent, however I do remember that when he had them, they tended to get ‘clogged’ and needed to be changed out with a new one every 6 – 8 weeks. Perhaps a visit or call to the doctor is in order?

Susan is doing well overall, but for the past couple of weeks she’s been so chronically fatigued she can barely get out of bed. She’s been itching again, her pee goes dark – then light – then dark again & her poo went light for a day, before going back to a less worrying colour. That’s when she called the Onc & went in for a blood test. The results were “the same, if not better”, than her last test in August. Her tumour marker was significantly down & her bilirubin was well within “normal” range … but she’s still got the same symptoms.

The Nurse Specialist said it may be that her stent’s getting “sludgy” & that it will clear itself but she’s going to push for an earlier appointment with the Onc himself as her next scheduled appointment is end of November.

She’s asked me to ask if “sludgy stents” are a common issue – & whether it really does clear itself, because she feels so unwell & is sleeping all the time, which is really distressing her.

Any comments will be gratefully received. Thank you from both of us.

    Julia
