Anyone has experience with fluid retention?

Mark…. Your family must be so very proud of you for tending to your Dad’s care in the way that you do. Mark, this is a difficult cancer – it likes to throw curveballs. Hopefully in a few days your Dad will be ready for the MRI.

MarionHi Mark, I can’t help with this except to tell you that I have been following your posts and wish there was something I could do to help your Father. You are a wonderful son and I am sure he is so very proud of you! When ever Teddy had dark urine it usually meant a blocked stent or an infection. I so hope they can find a good comfort zone for your Dad. As if our loved ones don’t go through enough! Sending good thoughts and prayers your way.
Hi patti77 and Marions we met the oncologist today and I asked him about the problem of water retention he said that it is from the liver enzyme are all high his gamma gt is 700!! and all the rest of the liver is with multiple tumors there is no blockage in the bile duct but the tumor had invaded all the liver and he wasn’t very positive about his prognosis he had been on xeloda and still the disease is progressing and gemzar too he thought about a new regimen to try folforinox but he thinks that he is too weak as it is a hard regimen and if giving him a after chemo he thinks that it would be without result he is asking a new MRI to see if there is a part of the liver not affected to see if he can do a chemoembolization as for the water retention he is taking lasix and seems to help him a little bit… Hope he can over come this situation if someone has been through this please help
Mark…ascities can be treated. Like everything else with this cancer, it is very individual. How your Dad will be treated and how he responds to such treatment that is a question only your Dad’s physician can answer. Please, stay in touch and keep us posted.

I am sorry to hear about your dads ascites. My dad had that as well and he was taking Furosemide for it. Like Marion said, this is unfortunately far too common with this cancer and there are loads of discussions about ascites here on the site. Here is a link that may be of interest to you –
As to the dark urine, I would suggest that if your dad hasn’t already discussed this with the doctor then he do so. I hope that your dad can get some help with the ascites asap.

Mark….I am so sorry to hear of the latest developments. Ascities (abdominal fluid retention) is not too uncommen occurrence with this cancer. I would assume that your Dad’s physician advised to reduce the salt intake. Many respond well to diuretics however; often times a Paracentesis(draining of fluid) is required. Raising his legs may also be beneficial. Mark, in re: to the dark urine, have you spoken to the physician about it? This previous discussion may help you understand better:

MarionHi Mark, my brother had dark urine and fluid retention. It was discovered that he had a collapsed bile duct at the time and they were able to do a procedure to reroute the duct. He also had a drain put in to drain the fluid from his abdomen, which was principally made up of lymphatic fluid.
Have they tested your father to see what the fluid is comprised of? My brother’s doctor also had his fluid checked for cancer cells and infection. (He had neither.)
Is your father in good enough shape to receive additional chemo or targeted radiation? I would recommend that you and your father create a list of questions and sit down with his oncologist to review what can be done and what the root of the issues are for his fluid retention.

Hi all, my dad is having fluid retention caused by high enzymes of the liver the gamma gt is 700 and the treating dr told him to take a capsule of lasix and aldacton 25mg daily for 2-3 days maybe it could reduce the water retention otherwise he have to go to hospital to take the water from his abdomen and lungs he is having dark urine,he is exhausted I hope he will be ok have his energy back but I’m so worry about him has anyone passed through water retention and what then? He hadn’t been on chemo since 6months cause he was clear but now the scan is showing that the tumors has spread in all the liver god bless any thoughts will help me get through that horrible disease
