Glad to hear that your mum had a good scan, good stuff indeed! Hopefully this will help with her mood and good luck for the Mayo trip.
Best wishes
Gavin
October 10, 2009 at 7:30 am #31362lalupesSpectatorThat’s wonderful news, April!! My sister’s due to start gemcitabine (or something which sounds like that) soon (hopefully). Is that the same thing as Gemzar?
Thanks for the update – it’s delighted me for your mum & increased my optimism for my sis.

October 9, 2009 at 11:20 pm #31361marionsModeratorThat is great news. We have had several members responding well to Gemzar and now, so does your Mom. No new spots and shrinkage of existing spots certainly, is something to celebrate. Congratulations.
I am also sending my best wishes for the upcoming trip to the Mayo Clinic.
MarionOctober 9, 2009 at 9:50 pm #31360ajcarman72SpectatorI just thought I would update on my mom’s CT scan last Thursday. She went in for her Gemzar treatment on Friday and saw the oncologist before that. She had her first ever “good” scan! I was so happy to hear this. No new spots and some shrinkage in the existing spots. This has been a huge mood lifter for her this past week and I hope this gives her good momentum going into her trip to the Mayo in a week and a half.
September 25, 2009 at 5:58 pm #31359ajcarman72SpectatorThanks all for the thoughts. Also thanks Marion for the name at Vanderbilt, I really appreciate that!
My mom just got out of her 4th session of Gemzar a little bit ago. She has a CT scan scheduled for next week as she is feeling uneasy since this past week she has not felt as good – not rebounded well after the chemo like she did the first few weeks. Thankfully she has a super doctor who jumps on looking into why this may be.
She goes to the Mayo on Oct 20th. In one instance I can’t wait for that date to arrive and in another it is a scary date that we fear may change things for her. Roller coaster emotions.
September 15, 2009 at 8:10 pm #31358devoncatSpectatorI am so glad your mom is tolerating her regime well. I hope it continues and she kicks some cancer butt.

September 15, 2009 at 7:22 pm #31357marionsModeratorApril……I am happy for your reporting in with much good news. Your Mom appears to be doing as well as can be expected something, always great to hear. April, Dr. Laura Williams Gaff is one of the oncologist at Vancerbilt. You may want to also contact her as she has extensive experience with Cholangiocarcinoma. I am wishing for continued success and sending my best wishes to your Mom.
MarionSeptember 15, 2009 at 7:13 pm #31356lainySpectatorIt all sounds good, you are on an upward trend. Just when things look so frustrating and confusing something turns it all around. Thanks for keeping us posted and wishing you continued SUCCESS!
September 15, 2009 at 6:57 pm #2688ajcarman72SpectatorJust thought I would post a quick update about my mom. I haven’t been around much the past few weeks because work is so busy for me.
She is two weeks into Gemzar and dealing with it well. Friday she gets her treatment, Saturday and Sunday are sucky days, but she rebounds well on Monday and is good for the week. Very happy that she is tolerating this well.
She has a referral to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester in the works. Anxious to see what they have to say!
Unfortunately we had to cancel her trip to meet us over on the WA coast. This is a bummer because I know she would love to go and love to see the kids. The kids were looking forward to seeing her too. However, being immune compromised and traveling is not a good thing. Also leaving her home base is difficult while undergoing this new therapy. We understand and will reschedule or we will go to her.
And I wanted to report that I have had good success going through the list of Major Cancer Centers listed here. I have been very impressed with the responsiveness of some of the centers and their willingness to help. My mom had a poor experience going through the University of Colorado unfortunately and I think that soured her on pursuing treatments elsewhere. Vanderbilt in particular was very responsive and willing to speak with me without her being a patient there. In fact, they phoned me twice just from my inquiry. The oncology nurse was very kind and understanding.
