November 16, 2015 at 10:21 pm #90418lainySpectatorOH MY, GARY, WE HAVE A CELEBRITY IN OUR midst. I have some of those books and I give them to my Doctors and when I meet new people in Phoenix DX with CC.
You are so right, we have come a long way in a short time but a lot more to go. My husband was DX August 2005, had a Whipple and bought 5 years. This Dec 6th will mark his 5th anniversary of “relocation”. He went through HELL but in just those last 5 years there are new treatments popping up all the time.
Can you tell us about your situation? Did you have another Cancer that led to this ? We all learn so much by reading of other members. You are extremely blessed to be in such good hands!!!!November 16, 2015 at 10:13 pm #90417gary-rMemberOn the landing page of the link you provided is the mention of a free e-book, “100 Questions & Answers about Biliary Cancer”. That was authored by my oncologist and his wife, also an oncologist. They are both experts in Liver, Pancreatic & Biliary cancers. Throughout the book are several areas labeled “Gary’s Comments”. That’s me.
This book is a fantastic resource. 7 years ago, there was almost nothing available regarding biliary cancer except some brief items on the Web that were very depressing. I highly recommend this to anyone who has CC or is a caregiver.

Please let us know how you are doing as we truly care. Trust yourself, the rest will follow! When first diagnosed you will start out walking slowly and before you know it you will be running with the pack!

Just want them to be aware that if someone has a health problem, the added arsenic might be a contributor. One thing that I’ve found is that there is no “good” level of arsenic.
Yes, I’ve been getting chemo for almost 7 years. It was this week, in 2008 that I began to show signs and was soon diagnosed with CC. I spent that new years eve in Memorial Sloan Kettering getting a biliary stent and biopsy . My first treatment, cisplatin & gemcitibine, was January 27th. It’s been a long time and the chemo has changed, but I’m happy to say that I’m still here and happy to be getting treatments every 2 weeks.
November 16, 2015 at 2:47 pm #90414lainySpectatorGary, Everything in moderation is how I live. While it was my husband who had Cholangiocarcinoma he never ate rice just a lot of pasta, being a Sicilian! EVERYTHING has something it seems that is harmful. One of my best friend is a Dr. of research with stem cells. I asked her one time about sweeteners and she said one would have to consume a truckload. I googled rice and also went to SNOPES and there is no clear cut decision. The only thing they all agree on is it must be cooked. There is arsenic in EVERYTHING largely due to pollution but life is for the living!
I am interested in knowing if you have been fighting Cholangiocarcinoma and would like to hear about your journey. WOW, 7 years on chemo is a loooong time! Hope you are doing OK.November 16, 2015 at 2:19 pm #90413gary-rMemberFor those who may be interested, the following link will bring you to the article in Consumer Reports.

November 16, 2015 at 9:36 am #90412middlesister1ModeratorGary,
Thank you for the info. I found it informative that high doses of black tea could raise the CA 19-9 so much. My thought was then that small amounts could be contributing to small increases (Mom’s CA 19-9 is always in the 40s and she drinks her tea everyday).
We don’t eat rice often, but would also be interested in hearing from others.
Best wishes.

When I first began, I found that drinking rice milk and eating rice & rice cakes was very soothing to my digestive system. After a while, my doctor noticed that my Alkaline Phosphatase readings were getting higher and higher. This is an indicator of inflammation in the liver.
About the same time, I read an article in Consumer Reports about the fact that rice contains Arsenic. At that point, I was drinking about 5-6 liters of rice milk per week, plus eating rice. I immediately stopped eating anything with rice and my alkaline phosphatase readings have dropped. They’ll never be normal unless we find a cure for this condition, but I am convinced that the large amount of rice was contributing to the elevated level in my blood tests.
Not sure if this will help anyone else, but you might want to read the information about arsenic in rice. Articles about this can be found by searching Google for “Arsenic in Rice”. I’d be interested to hear from others if you find this to be helpful.
