    Elmoks:
From what I know about Ascites, it does not mean ‘the final stage’! My husband had it for the first time about 3 months ago. His doc first tried a water pill which did cause him to pee quite a bit, but not enough. (Not certain what kind of water pill it was) and he had to go in for a Parentheses (draining the fluid off with a needle and a vacumn bottle).

About 3 weeks ago his belly again started swelling due to fluid….since he is already low on Potassium, his primary doctor just put him on another type of water pill that appears to be working wonders for him! It is Spironolactone 50mg tabs and he just takes one every morning. His stomach is receding now and he is becoming a ‘peeing god’ (in the words of Lainy).

I would suggest talking to your mom’s doctor about the possibility of getting her on some type of water pill to see if it has any effect on her build up of fluid. Also consider increasing the protein in her diet, eggs, cheese, etc. Read up and do some research on Ascites, it is very interesting reading. Being very informed on this cancer and all the things that go along with having CC is VERY important!

This is the first time I’ve heard of ‘stranding’ so I’m thinking I will have to do some research on that in case that word pops up out of nowhere for my husband Tom!

Go with God and KEEP KICKIN’ THAT cancer.

We did get to bake cookies!!! My mom wasn’t able to help but my dad and daughter filled the house with laughter and a big mess! Hahaha I’m pretty certain there were more sprinkles on the floor than anywhere else. My mom did say several times that she loved the way the house smelled. I am going to call tomorrow to get the results of her latest ca919 test so I will definitely ask about the “type” of ascites he thinks it is. Again, thank you all for your kind words, encouragement, and suggestions.

I don’t know if this will help – I had ascites that was easily controlled with diuretics.
At the time I had ascites, I was cancer-free. I took the diuretics for several months and since the haven’t been troubled by it.

I can’t comment on “stranding”. I’ve never heard of that. Sorry.

Did the Dr say the ascites is miligant? That will make a difference. If may just be fluid build up. Plus if they have any type of kidney failure it could also lead to ascites.

Jacque…..Only the physician will be able to answer this question however, we have seen, on this site, for members to have ascities for many months in fact, our Sophie dealt with it for two years. Are the physicians considering any treatments for your Mom? Is she feeling really uncomfortable? She must be so happy to have such a great family around her. Did you get to bake the cookies?
    Best wishes,

Marion, can you tell me, does ascites mean the final stage?? And, I also read that stranding could mean spread of cancer.??? Thank you for the information. I will definitely try that.

Hi Elmoks…..ascities is an accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity peritoneal (abdomen.) It can be controlled with either, diuretics, by needle or paracentesis. It is a common occurrence in liver disease and we have many postings on our site. You can find it by using our own google function, top, right side of page and entering the word “ascities.

My mom had a ct scan earlier this week and today we were told, vaguely, that she has ascites and there was “stranding.” Everything I’ve researched is so confusing…….. what can anyone tell me about either one?
