Hi Heather…I am in Round Rock Tx. My father passed away in April of this year. His CT scan showed tumors on his oementum and then he began having ascites. He turned quickly after that. I would say it was about a month. He was not eating and would projectile vomit bile. His body was basically shutting down at that point.
Originally they didn’t think the ascites was a big deal but once drained it came back again quickly. He was probably drained 3-4 times before he passed. I don’t think the ascites was a “sign” but I do think that the oementum tumors and his lack of appetite were.

    I absolutely hate this cancer.

    Heather –
I must have missed your earlier post, I usually try to chime in on these. I wills ay that IMRT can make people sick no matter what the docs say. My husband finished up 25 doses the middle of April although he did do it with a continuous chemo infusion but he was REALLY sick, weight loss of almost 50# and his feeling bad lasted for three weeks after he stopped. I can’t sort through which was the chemo and which was the radiation.
Portal hypertension and ascites are almost always a side effect of liver disease including tumors. It is caused when the liver becomes unable to filter the blood coming fast enough so fluid leaks from the blood vessels into the abdomen. It can be due to stiffness of the liver or tumors pressing on blood vessels. My guess is that his is the later and as the tumor/tumors die off things will work better. If/when the ascites become uncomfortable they can be drained off periodically. I would hope that will dropping tumor markers and probable death of tumors that this should clear up over time. One thing to help with ascites is to increase his protein intake as this will help draw the fluid back into his blood stream. Meats, eggs, cheeses, cottage cheese, whey protein drinks, protein shakes, etc.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Heather,

My dad had ascites but that was nothing to do with radiation of any type as he did not have that. Ascites are one of the side effects of cancer and many but but everyone gets that. Here is a link that may be of interest to you,

I hope that some of these links are of use to you. Glad to hear that Gordon’s CA-19 is coming down and also to hear you say that his docs say that his tumour is dying. If he is taking diuretics for the ascites then I hope that they work for him. My dad never had his drained and was taking Furosemide for that. Please let us know how things go.

    Hugs,

    Gavin

Sorry you did not get responses earlier. I do not have any experience with ascites but I know many have on this board. I do know that some have the fluid drained periodically for relief and that seems to work well. I am so happy to read that his CA 19-9 is trending down, how are his liver function blood results?

Okay I’m going to try this again,

It concerns me when I post and no one csn contact , me, that could possibly mean no one has experienced what Gordon is going through.
Gordon had radiation , ended in March. He got really sick and we ended up in the hospital at MdA. The radiation onc said Gordon SHOULD NOT have any side effects of radiation. So when he got so sick he couldn’t eat, stand the smell if food, weight loss we were shocked. So mar 15 ish he is in the hospital, developed portal hypertension and ascities. No one seem to think this was a big deal. Gordon lost 35 pounds ended up with an infection in his liver. All taken care of. It has been a hard road since then, too much to I into. But they said the tumor is dying, his tumor markers went from over 20000 to 182 and still trending done. But Gordon has portal hypertension and ascities he tske Los two different was pills and again we were told this should improve but,…????
    What do y’all think???
His time is limited?? You csn live with a liver damaged like that? ( He had IMRT TREATMENT)
