I am so sorry. Sadly, so many of us here can relate. I was in your shoes last summer with my own Mom. I’m sure it was a hard day for your family.
If your Mom wants to stay home, hopefully they can set her up on home hospice, that’s what my Mom did. And if your hospice org is anything like ours, you’ll be blown away – they were superb. They told us their purpose was to make sure that Mom was NOT in any pain. Got her all set up at my sister’s house with an awesome hospital bed with a special comfort mattress on top, all the meds she might need, a home health aid assigned twice a week to help with bathing and hair washing, a chaplain that prayed with Mom and did reiki once a week, and a social worker. Everyone involved with hospice are amazing people.
Concentrate on her comfort, and on making memories. If she’s able, get her to tell you stories, memories, and write things down. My Mom had planned to write a letter to each grandchild, but never got the chance. Don’t sweat the small stuff in life right now, just be with her and be there for her. I can tell you, you will be making memories that will stay with you forever.
January 15, 2011 at 12:59 pm #42959gavinModeratorDear fighting,
I am so sorry to hear this news about your mum. And yes, I so know that this will have been such a hard day for you and your family. I went through the same feelings when my dad was told the same news as your mum was and it was not easy to hear. Hopefully on Monday when hospice come to see your mum then you will find out more, and I so hope that they will be able to get your mums pain under control and make your mum feel as comfortable as possible. And please know that we are all here for you and know what you are going through right now and also how you are feeling. Thinking of you and your mum right now.
Hugs,
Gavin

MarionJanuary 15, 2011 at 3:52 am #42957fightingformomMemberWell we had the CT-Scan today and the cancer has progressed and shes no longer a candadate for chemotherapy. We were referred to hospice. She is failing and we need to get her pain under control. Hospice comes on monday to evaluate the situation. I knew this was coming but just hearing is has me thrown for a loop. I dont know what happens next with hospice, will she stay home, have to go into a hospice, how long? All these things keep playing out in my head.
Thanks for the well wishes and the prayers. Im relieved in one way that she will finally be at peace soon and with our Lord and Savior totally restored and happy but its me and my family that will just miss her. This was a hard day.
January 13, 2011 at 8:53 pm #42956cmSpectatorThanks everyone for getting back to me. He describes the pain as a tightness.
It may be muscle wastage he gets tired easily and he was in hospital a lot during chemo with infetions. We have a 18 month daughter and playing with her doesn’t help… but as all parents know, he feels it is well worth the pain.He is getting another scan in Feb so we can ask more questions then. It is controlled with strong pain killers. He doesn’t like asking questions becase a lot of he time the answers are hard to hear.
I will hopefully be posting good news in Feb of no further progression.
Thanks again,
CJanuary 13, 2011 at 5:51 am #42955marionsModeratorfightinformom….Does your Mum have the problems with hallucinations only during the day or, does it occur at other times also? If so, you might want to ask to have her potassium level checked. Just a thought.
Best wishes,
MarionJanuary 12, 2011 at 9:10 pm #42954gavinModeratorHi Fightingformom,
Lainy is right in that unfortunately hallucinations are one of the possible side effects of some pain meds. My dad was also on Haloperidol and that seemed to work quite well for him. Maybe you could speak with the doctors on Friday when you take your mum in for her CT scan and see what they can do to help here.
My best wishes to you and your mum,
Gavin
January 12, 2011 at 2:17 pm #42953lainySpectatorFightingformom. Hallucinations are common with some of the pain meds. There are some meds that will help that, you have to tell the doctor and he will prescribe something for you like Halodol (sp).
January 12, 2011 at 3:19 am #42952fightingformomMemberMy mom still has the pain. She had scans done on her lower back and had compression fractures. They did some procedures on it but nothing is helping. Shes been on morphine to handle the pain but hasent gotten out of bed much since November. Shes now 107 pounds and has daily hallucinations. We go to the hospital on Friday for a CT-SCAN. I have this horrible feeling that they are going to give us bad news. Seems like shes just been on a rapid decline since she finished her radiation in September.
– I feel so bad about Kris. She was an amazing woman. So strong! God Bless her and her family at this time. She will be missed!!

When Tom had back pain, it turned out to be a Kidney stone. I would mention it to his doctor.

January 12, 2011 at 12:12 am #42950lainySpectatorHello CM, my husband had pack pain but it ws helped by just taking Tylenol.
January 12, 2011 at 12:10 am #42949gavinModeratorHi CM,
Is your husbands back pain there all the time or does it come and go? My dad used to get pain in his lower back but it was not there all the time and he used to get a sort of short, sharp type of shooting pain. Have you spoken with your husbands doctors regarding this pain, and if so, what did they say?
Best wishes to you and your husband,
Gavin
January 11, 2011 at 11:12 pm #42948marionsModeratorCM…..has the back pain been brought to the attention of the physician? A scan of the lower back may be suggested.
All my best,
MarionJanuary 11, 2011 at 10:53 pm #42947nur1954SpectatorDear C – Not sure but it seems to be a fairly common occurence with CC patients. I wonder if the tumor presses on some nerves. I see that Kris mentioned it may have been from being in bed too much. Does your husband remain sedentary a lot? – Nancy
January 11, 2011 at 10:33 pm #42946cmSpectatorDear All,
I know this is an old thread but my husband has been getting worsening back pain over the past months. He was diagnosed in May 2010 with ICC with mets in bone & liver. He had 6 cycles of chemo finishing in Nov 2010.
The scans so far have shown no progression since May 2010- next scan Feb 1st, (St Bridget’s Day).
I cannot understand where the pain is coming from- He had no pain before his diagnosis until the stent was internalised. Is this normal?May Kris rest in peace- she was a beautiful person.
