I don’t expect him to gain back much of anything but he looks like a walking bone and even if he put back on 20 you wouldn’t see it. he eats whatever he wants but never fatty foods, cereal and milk, he has whatever I make for dinner. he has pb&j sandwich for lunch. he doens’t notice any foods except maybe hamburge and some heaveir meats to not sit well. what he eats and all has not affected him one way or another on bloat or gas and options are not an issue. When they say he is not even retaining pain meds on top of it, shoot, doesn’t matter what he puts in even with water, it ain’t working! We shall see. I’m not realy looking for solutions or advice, just venting who sucky everythign is. His nerve block is on Monday so maybe that will take his edge off.
July 30, 2010 at 12:09 pm #40369just_jillMemberOk, glad to hear he is already on the enzymes. Can you give us an idea of what he is trying to eat? I know for at least six months after my surgery, any thing made with hambuger was out of the question. Eventually, we could buy a 97% /3%, very lean, mix. Ensure was a big help, given to me by the case by the American Cancer Society. My confort food during this time was cottage cheese of all things. Oh, and popcycles. Its been almost two years since my whipple and I still can not eat much fatty foods at all. Chocolate of any kind, makes me pay, no potato chips of any kind, ice cream, or even frozen yougurt, gasses me up to where I am so miserable, I can not stand myself. Cheese does the same at times.
Oatmeal and toast is my normal breakfast. Maybe a turkey sandwich or a salad for lunch. Porkchops or steak, or fish,or chicken with baked potato and vegetable is normally dinner.
I lost 70 lbs. post whipple and have now managed to gain back only about ten.
July 29, 2010 at 8:13 pm #40368lsismanSpectatorThanks marions. I will ask about it, he is so boney it is devastating and I don’t know how they can let it go on. They seemed more focused on his pain relief and chemo than nutrition and weight gain. Thanks.

July 29, 2010 at 7:55 pm #40366marionsModeratorIsisman….Regarding TPN: rarely have we seen it on this board however, it had been an option for us, and it worked.
TPN stands for Parenteral nutrition. The person is fed intravenously and thefore bypasses the eating and digestion process. This of course, excludes anything given by mouth. The liquid contains salts, glucose, amino acids, lipids and added vitamins. And, it can be given at home in fact; my husband would carry the bag and go about his way.
I am not a physician and therefore, anything mentioned by me needs to be discussed with his doctor. However, given that your husband’s blood tests and scans appear to be normal, temporary TPN administration might be an option. Just a thought.
Good luck and best wishes,
MarionJuly 29, 2010 at 1:00 pm #40365lsismanSpectatorJust_Jill, has been on enzymes for both stomach and pancreas for months. Not helping. They even decided the pain meds are not absorbing either. trying new drugs and pain block, and he just started chemo now once a week. Don’t know the drug and we don’t care what it is called, just trust the doc to do the right thing. I don’t know what a TPN is Marions. I feel that this new oncologist is trying new things and we feel good about switching oncologists although the old one was alittle angry we dumped. Good man, but we just needed one that has had more cases of this cancer.
July 29, 2010 at 12:19 pm #40364just_jillMemberGet a script for some enzymes. I lost weight until at six months after my whipple, my surgeon gave me those. Helps with absorbing the nutrients from his food.
Praying and watching for updates.

Not much more to say other than my thoughts and prayers are with both of you, and praying for some good news to come your way.
Hang in there.

You and your husband have gone through a difficult time since the whipple last January and I’m hoping you get positive news today, with a new treatment plan. Looking forward to hearing from you following your meeting.Gerry

July 28, 2010 at 2:41 pm #3828lsismanSpectatorMy husband has been continuing to lose weight 230 to 150 lbs now. He looks sickly and awful. He is 51. he has been in increased pain for about two months and no pain meds of any sort are working. He is not absorbing calories no matter what goes in. We finally went back to visit the surgeon who did the whipple and it appears that he has nodes infected that show in the catscan. All labs shows perfect numbers in every category. So…. We are going to see a new oncologist today, one the surgeon recommends as being involved in more trials and things. My husband had picked a christian oncologist, who has treated many people we know and has cured cancer in people that other doctors said they were doomed and no treatment options!! But now we want to go to the oncologist who has the most CC patients and see what he has to say. We honestly don’t believe either doc matters but what the hell. I honestly do not feel my husband is going to gain ground. He has withered away so much, he is also freezing and sick and can’t take it anymore and nothing works. I will update after the appoitment today but I feel like we are on the downward spiral now and the last three months of praying for healing just has gone down the tubes. he had the whipple in January, so all this has come back way too fast!
