February 23, 2012 at 4:18 pm #58104jim-wildeMemberTiff, you already know how I feel about Dr Kato. He’s a brilliant and creative surgeon and is willing to take on challenges other surgeons walk away from and has the skills to pull it off. He has a reputation of helping those considered ‘inoperable’ by others. I’ve had a few surgeries at NY Presbyterian, and being a devout coward, go only to the superstars … Dr Oz for heart surgery, Dr Kato for the liver mess and most recently Dr Josh Sonett for some pesky little lung deals. For digestive diseases, NYP is organized around the disease, not the doctor’s specialty. The onc’s and surgeons are in the same dept., which is very good for patients.
I know of Kris’s Dr. Fong @ MSK by reputation and he is highly regarded also. As I mentioned to you, I think there is only one other surgeon in the US that does ex-vivo procedures besides Dr. Kato, which puts him in a very special category. One thing you can count on with Dr. Kato, is he will give you an honest opinion.
Good luck.

I love my surgeon. Dr. Fong. Although I have only 1 tumor. I don’t know how he would react to multiple tumors.
I have a feeling Dr. Kato will help you. If not, you now have a couple of names from Sloan Kettering. Dr. Fong’s direct number is 212-639-2016. He has office hours on Mondays, surgeries on Tues. and Wed., and I believe Thurs. and Fri. are saved for emergencies and paperwork.
I know he does a lot of travelling to speak to hospitals. Staff? Don’t know. And he was asked to consult in the building of Princeton NJ’s surgcal unit.
AND he speaks English to me!! He throws out big words and when I look at him he rephrases it into less than 4 syllables!! He showed me how to look at my CT scan the first time I met him. Of course, I have a Mac so I can’t see them by myself anyway!
And my oncologist, athough supposedly on the same page as my surgeon, still cautioned me about surgery. Oncologists and surgeons just don’t see things the same, I’ve come to believe.
Good luck Tiff! I hope you hear back really soon.Kris
February 23, 2012 at 1:44 pm #58102tiff1496MemberLeeAnn- I haven’t had a resection yet. I haven’t even talked to a surgeon.
February 23, 2012 at 4:45 am #58101leeannSpectatorDerin, Dr. Javle is the recomm chemo.
Tiff, I told my oncologist about dr.Javle. She had interview with him and said that it’s their standard treatment -chemo after resection even with negative margin.
Funny thing is that my surgeon is still recomm chemo even with my last bloodwork showing that tumor marker has gone up since surgery.
I guess that could change depends on pet/ct this friday
February 23, 2012 at 4:31 am #58100hamptonsarasotaMemberTiff,
Not sure, but remember, his specialty (I believe) is oncology. He doesn’t have a surgical background. You need to talk to surgeons for the surgical option. They have a different approach and perspective for sure. My wife asked Jarnagin how I would leave the hospital and he was very adamant that I would ‘walk out of here’ after surgery. If it wasn’t for the hospital policy of wheelchairs, I would have walked out, albeit with a really big scar!! Try to give them a call tomorrow, see what they say. I think if you call that number, you will get Elizabeth, if you mention me, they should remember me. Cathy is Jarnagin’s main nurse but Elizabeth should be able to get you whatever info would be needed for them to review your files and records.February 23, 2012 at 4:25 am #58099tiff1496MemberI will Derin!!Thanks for the info!
I wonder why does Dr. Javle tell everyone they need chemo? I’m confused why he said I can’t have surgery…I need a cure, not chemo. I do believe he is a good doctor, but I REALLY want surgery!
February 23, 2012 at 4:25 am #58098hamptonsarasotaMemberLeeAnn,
You sent a note to Javle or Jarnagin? I’ve dealt with both, one cut on me (Jarnagin), one responded immediately to email (Javle)…February 23, 2012 at 4:16 am #58097leeannSpectatorHey Derin,
I emailed him few weeks ago and he recomm chemo, too.February 23, 2012 at 4:10 am #58096hamptonsarasotaMemberDr. William Jarnagin, chief of hepatobiliary surgery, was my surgeon at Sloan Kettering in NY, try him out, see if you can send your records to them. Direct phone to his nursing staff is 212-639-7601. See what happens…
February 23, 2012 at 4:05 am #58095tiff1496MemberLOL Derin…I didn’t.
He really is a nice guy. I love talking to him.
