Hi,,
If I may, as far as I am concern, chemotherapy agents are toxic in general. For example, 5FU or Gemzar kills cancer by interrupting their cell reproduction cycle, as well as to the healthy cells inside a human.
I am not a doctor, but I can say the above assumption without a doubt with my professional career experience.
I agree sometimes” not to be treated” is as good as or better than “to be treated” especial in some cancer patients at the late stage of the game.
I agree with Eli, chemotherapy is not only tough, but in my point of view, sometimes it is more inhuman than you think both physically and mentally speaking. I can say that because I am also a patient too of this cancer.
I think the oncologist did your mom a favor by suggesting no to chemotherapy.
I am not surprised if some doctor will provide your mom treatment knowing that it may actually decrease the quality of life of your mom.
Therefore your mom’ s oncologist do have a heart for his/her patients.
God bless.July 6, 2013 at 11:34 pm #73404EliSpectatorHi Orlysud,
My wife had surgery, radiation and chemo at the age of 44/45. These are tough, tough treatments. After witnessing, up close, what my wife had to endure, I can tell you this: I can’t imagine an 83 year old receiving the same treatments.
I think you have to open your mind to the idea that your mom’s doctors did the right thing.
July 6, 2013 at 10:27 pm #73403RandiSpectatorHello,
I can see that you are rehashing a lot of what happened to your mother to make sense of it. Unfortunately, we cannot change the past and ruminating about it takes the joy out of life as I am sure you know. I am glad that you are on medications for your anxiety and depression, being monitored by a psychiatrist, and joined a support group. Those are all positive things that will help you deal with your sadness and loneliness.
And France! I guess they have good wine, but those laws about inheritance seem crazy!
As for your family, I agree with Lainy that worrying about them is just hurting you. I once read that holding on to anger is like taking poison and expecting someone else to die. It just hurts you over and over.
I hope that your Mom makes her presence known to you soon.
Hugs,
-Randi-July 6, 2013 at 2:05 pm #73402lainySpectatorDear Orlysud, I can only say that this is one of those times we just don’t have any answers. I was reading your posts from May and June and sorry I missed them but was gone about 3 weeks on vacation. Mama sounds like she was a very hip, chic and trendy lady with a very free spirit. I was going to suggest you put some kind of Memorial in your back yard and then read that you did just that! Good for you. I can’t believe it’s been over 8 months already, wow! Glad I don’t have to deal with France and I think that is hanging over your head like a dark cloud and after it is all settled you will feel a big weight has been lifted. As for your family, what can I say? Every dog has his day as the saying goes. I would rather dismiss them as they are not worth the bad energy they sap from me. Did you ever think that Mama has not come around as she feels she upsets you too much? Mmmmm I am going to e mail you a short but terrific article on signs to watch for from our loved ones. We all heal at different speeds and you will be fine again, I already see signs of that!
July 6, 2013 at 1:11 pm #73401orlysudSpectatorDear Lainey,
She was doing well except for the Bile Duct cancer. I feel like sometimes doctors don’t care too much about the elderly. She was never hospitalized prior to the diagnosis but they did say that she had it for several years. That was the only health issue she had, that’s why I think it’s strange that they couldn’t do anything. The doctors did say that her bile duct was so soft and delicate that they were afraid to tear it that’s why they didn’t perform surgery. I don’t know why they couldn’t treat her. They said chemo would be too much for her bod to take.
July 6, 2013 at 12:59 pm #73400lainySpectatorDear Orlysud, I am not sure but something tells me it is not the age but it may depend on her health condition outside of the CC. By 83, there are so many things that could have entered in to their decision. I hope you are doing much better now as I am sure your Mom would want you to be living a happy life.
July 6, 2013 at 12:46 pm #8580orlysudSpectatorAre there treatments for advanced Bile Duct cancer in elderly women? My mother was 83 1/2 and they refused to give her chemo, radiation or to perform surgery. They just let her die. Is that common or was it too risky?
