MarionAugust 2, 2009 at 5:56 pm #29878amy191SpectatorMy Mom also had a blood clot. She had been on blood thinners since last year for atrial fib. They took her off of it when she had been diagnosed with CC in April. During her last stay in the hospital, they found a blood clot in the pulmonary vein. The official cause of death was cc but I still think that the blood clot had something to do with it because in the hospital, she had just finished using the restroom and the nurses were helping her back into bed and she had trouble catching her breath and slipped away. It’s very interesting to hear of other’s experiences along the same line.

My Husband Butch had a blood clot that traveled to his lung. It happened after he had the biopsy, before we had the results, and they said he had a couple of small ones also. The Doctors said it was the result of having the tumors in his liver. He had to take coumadin (and other blood thinners) for the remainde of time he had with us. So I thought that it was common to have blood clots with this type of cancer.Joyce

I did the search Marion recommended here & also researched some more on the internet & it appears that indeed blot clots are a common occurance in many cancer patients. I learned that some forms of cancer actually create a substance called ‘mucin’ which causes excessive platelettes to form. Our doctors said the cancer was ‘throwing clots’ & I have read that in other blogs here as well.
Thanks very much for the info. I guess I needed to know that it was not preventable. I so wanted to help my husband conquer this terrible thing & I have been blaming myself for not knowing how or what to do for so long. Just so frustrated that I couldnt help him.
I am grateful there is a site such as this & I would be very happy volunteering my time to obtain more research into a possible cure for CC. Or, at least some means of detecting it before it reaches the advanced stages.
My sympathy to all those who are battling CC or have loved ones who are. I hope that an effective method of early detection & a definitive treatment/cure for CC can be found very soon.
God bless, Cyndi
July 30, 2009 at 3:42 pm #29881BazelSpectatorPart of my dad’s treatment included Chemoembolization. Because they use the femoral artery to reach the desired spot, for 6 hours after the procedure he had to lay in bed flat on his back. Going in to the first procedure dad had been quite active and generally felt good. The short version of this story is that dad ended up with a PE and was hosptialized much longer than planned.
So while not a direct correlation – I think it is a sound observation to state that dad probably was experiencing thinkened blood at that point.

July 30, 2009 at 12:04 pm #29883magicSpectatorHi some types of cancer can actually produce a substance that causes blood to clot and it is common for this to be the 1st sign of cancer and equally common to treat as an ongoing symptom. Also I believe some of the treatments and of course the inactivity can predispose people to clots.
JanetJuly 30, 2009 at 10:55 am #29882darlaSpectatorHi Cyndi,
When my husband first became ill, a stent was put in his right ureter for what they thought at the time was a kidney blockage. He developed a blood clot in his leg and when he continued to develop clots even though he was put on blood thinners is when they started to suspect there was cancer somewhere in his body even though to that point they had found nothing to explain the symptoms he was experiencing. I was told that there is an association between uncontrolled clotting and cancer. I too believe this has been stated on this board by others, so you may want to do as Marion suggested & try a search. I am sure you will also be hearing from others with similar experiences.

July 30, 2009 at 5:15 am #29885marionsModeratorCindi……I am so sorry to hear of your husband’s passing. My heart goes out to you as I, and many of the other widows understand so well the pain you are experiencing. I am hoping for your heart to heal…one day at a time. Cindi…..blood clots associated with this cancer have been reported on this board many times. The information is hidden in the many previous threads and can be found by using the “Search Function” and entering “blood clots.” Of course, there may be others wanting to share their thoughts with you also.
I am sending all my love to you,

JamieJuly 30, 2009 at 3:49 am #2455cyndiSpectatorHi all,
My husband died a few months ago due to complications of his stage IV Cholangiocarcinoma. He had a pulmonary embolism (blood clots in his leg and lungs) and was put on blood thinners but then he sufferred a major stroke 1 week later (a blood clot in his brain blocked an artery there). He had neurosurgery to remove the clot but suffered major brain damage & could not be revived. A final full-body CT scan showed that he was developing numerous additional blood clots throughout his body despite the blood thinners being administered since his PE.
Doctors said this was due to the cancer. That cancer can cause the blood to thicken, although they are still unsure how or why.
I’ve only heard of one other case where a cancer patient had blood clots forming as a result of their cancer & I’m wondering. How common is this? Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks, Cyndi
