Hi Ellen. My mom was in Assisted until January. She is very healthy for 94 just dementia. We had her at one of the best facilities here but she lost 10 lbs in 2 months! They were not taking care of her! I found an organization that helps one to find a private home for care. We found a great place that has 4 women in the same condition. She gets individual attention, put 9 LBS back on in 3 months and is as happy as she can be. Also gets 3 home cooked meals a day and snacks. I know I am not sitting in your wallet but if you can, a Private Home Care facility is wonderful and actually less than Assisted living. The other thing you might look in to is someone to come to your dad 7*24. But what we found out is that the 7*24 care ran the same as staying in her own assisted apartment. I would do the private home over and over again. It is not your sister’s fault, that he is falling. Perhaps she just needs to be relieved of taking him in to her house. It is a huge responsibility and a huge mental stress and there is no shame in that. Hope all goes well at your meeting.

Thank you Lainy. Hoping it is as simple as that. I am worried now because my sister is spooked over the constant falls and feels responsible. She wants to convene tomorrow to discuss alternative arrangements. Not sure Dad is ready for hospice , can’t go home alone, cannot come to my house (too many stairs) …running out of options…
    Thanks again!

Does your Dad feel better after being hydrated? A few days in the hospital should achieve this. Also, how many calories is your Dad consuming daily? You might want to consider adding extra protein in order to bring up his calorie count and possibly seek the advice of a nutritionist. Dehydration, limited calorie intake, pain pills, and a possible depression all. may contribute to your Dad’s current condition. Also, did you ever receive an explanation re: his back pain? Given that his tumor markers continue to rise and your Dad is experiencing pain in his back it might be best to speak with the physician. Please, keep us posted.
    Best wishes,

Hi ONeillep. My mother is 94, much older than your dad but as we get older it seems we just don’t want to drink water. Every time he has gotten dehydrated for the last 10 years she ends up in the hospital extremely weak and confused. They give her an IV for a few hours and send her packing. No matter what we say to her she will not drink. So, our experience has been that dehydration is what is causing a lot of her problems. Hope it is that simple for your dad!

Another fall and another setback. News from oncologist is mostly good but my Dad continues to weaken. What is that about? He scans were all good and petscan showed that tumor shrunk, yet he has no energy/appetite, etc and he continues to lose weight, get weak and fall. He fell again today at my sisters (where he was recuperating) and tests in the er showed dehydration, low blood sugar, etc. Situation seems so contradictionary-good(fair)news on the cancer front , yet progressivie failure otherwise and weight loss ,etc. Is this common? Don’t know what to do next. My sis is afraid to take him back home (as he fell under her watch) , yet not really ready for hospice? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Glad to hear that your Dad is back home. I also wanted to mention that a clogged stent can cause elevated blood levels. Something, you might want to discuss with the physician. And, please, stay with us. The members on this site will support you and help you along.

Dad is recovering well from the fall. Thanks. He fell last week in the store (which precipitated the hospital stay, pet scan, blood tests, mri, etc. He was having alot of back pain. We all thought the worst. Dr. put him on a painkiller which made him dizzy and then he got dehydrated and fell. What a week. He is pretty banged up and weak but home w/my sis. I am hopeful from results of petscan but he is preoccupied w/blood test results. Thanks for the info and support. This disease has had us on a roller coaster for 9 months and it IS hard!

Hello and welcome to our site. Indeed, we had plenty of discussion re: the CA 19-9 tumor markers. At times, elevation of these markers do not equate with progressive disease. Generally, the physicians will take in account all other symptoms including the results of the scans in order to determine the status of the cancer. Others may have more informatin coming your way. Also, I am enclosing a few links pertaining to tumor markers:

My 76 yr old father was diagnosed w/inoperable cc last August. He was stented and then had radiatioin in Nov-Dec. Recent Petscan shows tumor has shrunk. He fell last week was hospitalized and had a series of tests. Petcan, CT scan and MRI indicated no other cancers, YET blood test showed cancer markers very much elevated from time of diagnosis. Any idea why this would be? Trying to convince him that results are positive but he is focusing on these test results which seem inconclusive. Any thoughts or experience w/these blood test markers?
