“Ernie Harwell’s Christmas card to all of Detroit” – 12/25/2009

    He writes…

“This year, I’m not sending cards. Last July, doctors gave me only six months (more or less) to live. That was five months ago. I am still hanging around. But, while getting ready for my new adventure, I’m not dying to send out cards.”

    Donna,
Whether or not it is in addition to pancreatic, he does have bile duct cancer also. My mother has a carepage and I was keep up with a few other carepages for patients with CC and I read that Ernie Harwell recently made a visit to a local fundraiser in his area being held for a CC patient. The update made the connection that they were both fighting the same disease.
    Hopefully he is doing well.

We wrote a letter to Mr. Harwell on the basis of this news article. When searching the Web for a mailing address I found out that he has pancreatic cancer. The mailing address was in care of an attorney’s office. We never received a reply.

    Hi All:

Thought this news story today was of interest. They don’t name the disease in the story but seems clear it’s the one we all share.

Detroit Reels; Ernie Harwell Has Inoperable Cancer
    By Micheline Maynard
Detroit sports fans woke up Friday with a collective gasp: Ernie Harwell, the beloved broadcaster, has been found to have inoperable cancer.

Harwell, 91, disclosed his illness in an interview with Bill McGraw, a veteran writer with The Detroit Free Press.

Harwell, who was hospitalized in mid-August, said a tumor had been diagnosed in the area of his bile ducts that doctors said was inoperable. He said he had declined to have surgery or other treatment.
