I will say – I never thought I would be on an internet discussion board where we talk about gas, burping, bloating, urine color, type of stool, tubes, bags, etc….I guess we ARE all family – because that’s the only people you would discuss that stuff with!
October 27, 2010 at 9:55 pm #43233ironbarkMemberThanks Julia,
See, even in the sadest and most stressful of times there is humour, it’s how I’ve always coped
I hadn’t thought about the connection between my signature and this thread, but there is a clear relationship. Maybe Dad needs his sails adjusted …… LolOctober 26, 2010 at 10:21 am #43232lalupesSpectatorHello Lesley – In view of this discussion, I particularly love your signature quote!! It’s brilliant!!

October 25, 2010 at 2:42 am #43231slittle1127MemberLainy – Thanks for the referral to Walgreens for Brioshe If he gets more problem with it, we will definitely try that. Right now we are trying to deal with ascites. He couldn’t walk last night due to the massive swelling in his legs. He is better today after resting his legs above his heart, green tea, and lemon water. Now he feels bruised.
October 25, 2010 at 12:14 am #43230ironbarkMemberThanks to everyone for your input. At least hearing that all this gas is common is somehow comforting – I am discovering a lot of weird emotions with this diagnosis, *she laughs*.
You guys really are awesome.
October 24, 2010 at 5:42 am #43229lainySpectatorSusan, my husband had constant hiccups after his Whipple surgery for 5 months, no one could help. Then he was told by a Pharmacist to try Brioshe. It’s like alka seltzer in a blue bottle at Walgreens, and after using it twice in an hour, his hiccups were gone. Strange, but it worked.
October 24, 2010 at 4:24 am #43228slittle1127MemberMy husband has some burping, hiccups, and bloating. The bloating is increasing and I am quite concerned. He had burping and hiccups before chemo. They have not increased after chemo but remain about the same. He also takes a stool softener every other day which helps a lot. I have given him Gas X but he says it doesn’t help much. Best wishes. Blessings, Susan
October 23, 2010 at 7:04 pm #43227lisaSpectatorI had bloating, gas, and burping issues when I drank carbonated beverages.
October 23, 2010 at 6:35 pm #43226gavinModeratorI forgot to say, my dad never had chemo either so that was not the reason for the issues that he had with burping etc.
October 23, 2010 at 6:34 pm #43225gavinModeratorHi Lesley,
My dad also had many of the issues that you describe. He spoke with his specialist about this and he recommended eating foods that were easy to break down such as minced beef, soup etc. In my dads case, his tumour was obstructing a tube that led out of his stomach and this was cuasing some of the issues that he was having.
As to bowel movements, my dad was put on movicol and lactulose soon after diagnosis. The movicol didn’t really have too much effect but he had much more success with the lactulose and he started taking this twice a day morning and night and got on a lot better with that. He also had the burping a lot and didn’t really find anything that helped with that and I guess it is just par for the course here. Does your dad have issues with hiccups? As again, I think that these are quite common with CC and something that my dad also had.
Best wishes to you and your dad,
Gavin
October 23, 2010 at 6:57 am #43224marionsModeratorLeslie….As Jemima has mentioned some foods are more difficult to digest than others and enzymes may help in this process. As you know the function of bile is to break down fats. And, your Dad’s high bilirubin count attests to the fact that this process is being interrupted. Is your Dad moving around? Walking especially after ingestion of a meal may also help with his digestion. Regular bowel movements at times with the support of stool softeners also have helped some of our members. But, as a whole I believe that this board has more comments than any other site regarding gas, burping, constipation, and bloating. It appears to come with the territory. I am hoping for others to chime in also. And, of course, the google function, top, right hand side, will lead you to previous threads discussion this issue.
Best wishes,
MarionOctober 22, 2010 at 11:47 pm #43223jemimaMemberHi Lesley
I can’t really say much about what might help your Dad but my mum has had a lot of bloating and burping. She is now on chemo but definitely had this before hand. From what I remember they just prescribed her anti-nausea meds which helped with the bloating and therefore the burping. She has always been quite ‘windy’ (!) but was more so. Mum has continued to have a good appetite but I guess some types of food are worse than others.
Maybe the doctors can just prescribe some anti-bloating meds. There are plenty out there…..
I hope you get it sorted soon
best wishesJemima
October 22, 2010 at 3:17 am #4200ironbarkMemberI know that there have been several threads about burping, but they all seem to be about after chemo, and that doesn’t apply to my Dad.
Dad was diagnosed in late August and had an embolectomy about six weeks ago, he’s also had three stents/drains inserted.
He has had a recent infection too, but this has apparently resolved. His bilirubin levels are currently really high, and we are in limbo waiting for them to drop to enable him to have a liver resection.Dad says that he feels really bloated, and is always burping – he seems to do this deliberately to try to ease the discomfort.
Is this a common thing in CC, and is there any way to relieve it? Also does anyone know WHY he would be feeling so bloated? He was constipated, but that has resolved. His stomach wasn’t emptying properly, so he was put onto maxalon which seems to have helped. His appetite was terrible, and he wasn’t eating much, but that has improved/
Still the bloating and burping persists. The doctors don’t seem to be too concerned, but it causes him some distress and embarrassment, so if there is some explanation and remedy then we would all appreciate it.
Thanks all
