The good and bad of the tumor marker tests is we watch them like hawks and worry over them, when they can be inexact indicators. One of my doctors told me that he was only concerned when the CA 19-9 number “doubled or tripled.” My own marker numbers moved up a bit during chemo and radiation treatments, then eased back down again.
The doctors seem to use the CA-19-9 number as one piece of information among many to assess how a patient is doing and they seem to look for big changes or a trend.
