I realized today that although my husband had “some” relief with diuretics in the first 2 days, it has taken about a week for him to have significant relief. Who knew? He is feeling so much better. He has gone from being in bed most of the time with a good day one every week or so to having 4 really good days in a row. We are enjoying every moment. He is feeling better – he still gets weak and vomits often, but we are really rejoicing with our good days. Blessings, Susan

Along with the Diuretics your mom should be elevating her feet as much as possible and wearing compression stockings. My husband Tom also has an issue with fluid in the Abdomen and swelling in his feet. On days where he sits in the recliner with his feet elevated, his feet look good. On days where he has his feet ‘on the floor’ they are huge by the end of the day.
Also do not worry about the tumor markers too much. Yes, they are indicating that there is cancer in her body (but you already knew that) but there are many things that can cause those markers to go up and down. I wish I could tell you how many times my husband’s tumor markers have gone sky high, only to be much lower the next time he’s had them checked. An infection in the body, chemo, etc. can all cause the tumor markers to elevate!
I would worry more about more yellowing of the eyes or the skin, intense vomiting, bloody stools, white stools, black stools (indicated bleeding) etc. rather than the tumor markers.
Go with God and KEEP KICKIN’ THAT cancer.

We went to a local store and bought some knee length compression stockings (about $18.00) and it’s the best investment I’ve made in a long time. I put them on him BEFORE he even gets out of bed, and it makes a hugh difference!
Currently my husband does not have enough fluid in his abdomen for them to ‘tap’ it off, but the Diuretics are helping with that as well. He does have a low potassium issue so the diuretic that the doc gave him does not deplete the potassium in his body…
Tumor markers differ from person to person. Mine have always been near normal, even though I have Stage IV cancer.
Thank you so much Susan. I remember the Dr saying it could take a week before they start working….. I’m worried that’s to long to wait.
Diuretics generally begin working right away. It may take a day or so for good drainage, but if you are not seeing good results, perhaps a different diuretic would be more beneficial. Check with the doctor as one would hope she wouldn’t be getting worse. I’d call the doctor first thing in the morning (I know it’s Saturday, but isn’t someone on call). Don’t let the ca marker get you down, see how mom is doing day by day. As always, celebrate the good days and hold tight on the rough days. Blessings to you and your family, Susan.
Today we found out that the tumor marker went up. I’ve heard many people say that you can’t put much weight in that, but with everything else going on with my mom how can we not? When my dad talked to her about it tonight she was very upset. I personally think that she knows that things are not good…… oh, and her swelling in her legs seems to be getting worse. I hope that the diuretics start working. I’m wondering how long we have to wait until we know if they are working???
