Dear Boomgaart,
Ditto what Lainy and Louise said. I had a resection last year at age 51. I did not have any problems with the drains, but did have a build up of fluid around my lung that needed to be drained (1+ liter) a couple of weeks after I got home. I will keep you both in my prayers. Please keep us posted on how he is doing and if there is anything else we can do for you.
God Bless,

Welcome! It is good that you found us so quickly. We’re here to share the journey. Seems we all have our own journey, but we experience many of the same twists, turns, hills, and valleys. I’m 54 and I have had my hemoglobin drop more than once. Often, it means receiving a blood transfusion. There is also a shot they have given me when the level is below normal, but not low enough to merit whole blood.
I have been my own advocate, reading as much as I could handle on various web-sites. This is a good site to explore. I also asked a lot of questions and usually had a list to take with me whenever I saw the oncologist. I can’t give medical advice and don’t have enough facts to be convincing about what to do. I’m not sure anyone can tell you or your dad what to do. Remember, he has the right to say yes or no to any recommendation, and if the oncologist doesn’t agree with his decisions, you have the right to seek another doctor. In fact, second opinions (or third…) are often helpful.
Hang on for the ride of your life, ask all the questions you want/need to ask, and know that I am praying for you both.
Louise

So often we see these set backs but they do not mean a doomed future. Just knock down one thing at a time. I know, its easy to say but you have to have a whole lot of hope, strength and attitude. Can’t answer for the drainage except to say they do back up now and then. The only thing we know for sure about CC is that we know not much. We try to be optimistically realistic.
I am wondering why your dad is not in the hospital having these things taken care of. Not sure what they mean by leak. When my husband had his Whipple he did develop a tiny hole at the resection. This is pretty common not sure if they mean that kind of leak. May we ask what hospital you are going to and where you live? Again welcome, and sorry you had to find us. Please keep us posted.June 22, 2009 at 2:52 am #2427boomgaart1SpectatorHello all, I am writing for my father. I myself was diagnosed with breast cancer this past march. I caught it early Stage I no lymph node involvement.
However, my father went in for a procedure to check for a gallstone 3 weeks after my surgery and after a series of tests and scans we are told it is CC. The doctors said no biopsy that they would just go in and remove it.
Turned out the cancer was in the gall bladder, that was removed as well as 60% of his liver and of course the ducts where it all started.
He is in his early 60’s in good health and doctors mentioned what great shape his heart was in.As he was recovering he took a turn for the worse, first they only had put in 1 drain which somehow I beleive backed up and has now caused an infection. They went in and put in another drain but the stuff draining ain’t nice. He seems to be lossing hemoglobin. Dr.’s suspect a leak. Did anyone of you experience something similar? if so what did you do? what did Dr.’s recommend to you?
We are too meet with the surgeons to discuss options, as my father is very weak and feverish and swollen from his hands and arms.
