Dear Milkey welcome to our wonderful family. My husband was told in June that he could have palliative chemo if he wanted it and he decided no. He is 78, has been fighting this for 5 years and decided he wanted quality not quantity. He is in Hospice Home Care but doing ok. No one knows when it is their time, everyone is different. I feel the bottom line is comfort and as long as the Meds are making him comfortable I know we made the right decision. You sound like a very strong woman and when dad makes his decision, you will be able to take this journey by his side and you will not regret it. I call this time our Precious Time, he says we are on a honeymoon. I don’t ever want to look back and only remember the monster disease. I want to remember how cute I still think he is. This is the time to make a few more precious memories with your dad. Good luck and please keep us posted.
P.S. If you type Asceties in to our Search bar you will get a ton of posts on the subject.

My dad was diagnosed with Stage IV cholangiocarcinoma with secondaries in the liver and pancreas in March this year. He was told that the cancer in the bilary tree and other places was not operable and that the best option was palliative chemo. They inserted a stent to relieve the jaundice and sent him home. He went for a 2nd opinion and was given the same advice. He has had chemo for about 10 weeks – but has decided to give it a break as it was making him so sick. He has also been told numerous times that the chemo was not going to cure anything and would only extend his life by a matter of months. He has now developed malignant ascites and is having his abdomen drained every fortnight. He recently developed an infection which they are currently treating with antibiotics. He is depressed and is giving in to this disease – to some extent i don’t blame him- how long can you keep fighting when the drs have given you a death sentence. I would love to hear from others fighting this disease and as i am a very practical person, would like to hear what i will be dealing with next. I have read on some sources that once malignant ascites develops there is only a matter of months to go, is this true?
