kmemoro…nausea and/or pain are inherent to this disease. Is your Dad responding to anti-nausea medication? Based on the experience with my husband this should take priority at this time. Your Dad must be made comfortable. You might also want to ask the physician whether he/she would consider any further chemotherapy for his/her loved one. The answer may be helpful to you.
    All my best wishes,
    Marion

Dear Kmemoro, my husband was 78 when we got the end prognosis. He was offered Palliative chemo and turned it down saying he would rather have quality.
His decision was based upon the ONC telling him that the Palliative would only buy him a month. So, my suggestion would be to ask the ONC how long he thinks it would be with and without treatment. The ONC said the chemo would buy him a month. That might help your dad make his decision. This is one of the biggest debates and is a very personal decision. Be strong!

    Hi,
The oncologist will draw lab first to determine whether the platelets is too low to start Gemzar(normally if it is <50,000 ,they will not start Gemzar;some doctor will not give Gemzar if the platelets<75000)Gemzar is known for decreasing the platelets counts but I am sure the oncologist will do labs(CBC) befrore given the chemo. I ,myself do not have any platelets problems during the 14 months treatment of Gemzar.
My suggestion is quality over quantity for your dad esp. he has had both radiation and chemo not long ago.
    God bless.

    Byron,
He had 5 weeks of 5 days a week.
We went to the Dr. yesterday and it seems he has fluid in his belly. they will take it out Monday and then we will see what happens.
He know wants to start him on a regimen of Gem once a week for 2 weeks then off for a week or two. I am concerned as his blood counts have gone down already and I know that drug is known to lower the counts. I dont want him in and out of the hospital for transusions and getting weak all the time.
I would rather have him have a better quality for a shorter period than a sick couple of extra weeks-am I wrong?
I Love my Dad with all my heart and want the easiest course for him. 3 of his brothers have died of various types of CA and he always said that the treatments were worse on them than the disease.
Help me to understand the best course for all of us!

    kmemoro,

I’m pretty new to chemo, but everything I have read would lead me to believe that the chemo would not be causing the nausea this far out. I could be wrong and I do understand that every “body” reacts in it’s own special way to these chemicals that are put into us. For how long was he on chemo?

does anyone know how long the naseau lasts after finishing chemo? My Dad finished chemo the 8th of Sept and still experiences bouts of naseau. Is this normal or is this just the disease?
