Losing your fingerprints is a minor inconvenience for many, but for a few, it can be a hardship if you need to be fingerprinted for work, travel or other reasons. It is recommended that if you think you might need to use your fingerprints, e.g., you might encounter biometric fingerprint scans in airports, that you ask for a letter from your physician explaining that you are taking capecitabine and may be fingerprint-impaired.
I lost my fingerprints even though I had no hand-foot syndrome issues with my hands (just my feet suffered). My fingerprints silently disappeared. So it is possible to lose your fingerprints without having any other hand symptoms. My first warning was my phone no longer recognizing me. I had to be fingerprinted for work about a year after ending capecitabine, and my prints had returned – faintly – so this side effect seems a temporary one.
