As a patient, I can sympathise with the nurse. While I was in the hospital recovering from surgery due to an abscess I was so tired of being in so much pain, I wished for a shot to put me out of my misery. Thankfully I recovered and am so glad I survived that whole ordeal.
November 2, 2012 at 12:06 am #66090lainySpectatorDIL and ELI, I so agree. Teddy and I had a very bad experience as his last 3 days were in a Hospice Facility. I had him pain free when he entered as he was on mega Morphine. When I checked him in I told the Nurse that once in a while his back would get sore and I just gave him Tylenol for that. She said, “Oh I can’t do that, it will hurt his liver”. WHAT? He was passing. 2 other head Nurses replied the same thing. Then the day he passed, until he started shutting down, I wished that I had brought his Morphine from home as I discovered they had not been giving him anything! I would have given him what ever it took! Needless to say the 3 Head Nurses were fired and I got an attorney. But I really don’t think any of us know what we would be capable of doing until the time would come. This is also why I tell people that eventually the good memories take over the bad ones….been there done that and it is true. No judgements from this corner.

To be clear, I wasn’t trying to pass a judgement when I posted the story.
November 1, 2012 at 11:22 pm #66088daughternlawSpectatorI don’t think there is any room for judgement in regards to this story. I don’t believe human suffering at the end of life should be something we just accept. I do feel that if one has a terminal illness, they should be able to chose the time of their passing. I hope Randall rests in peace.
October 29, 2012 at 6:41 pm #66087barbara6193SpectatorThere is much more to this story, I’m sure. This is actually in my area of New Hampshire. He was surrounded by family at home in his final hours. I believe she linked the foundation as a place for donations to go in lieu of flowers, as she knew that The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation would put it to good use with the hopes of helping others with research and advocacy. Her brother-in-law was suffering. I don’t condone what she did, but I won’t criticize her either, as none of us know what conversations or wishes happened within the family. A tragic story. Rest in peace, Randall.
October 28, 2012 at 3:40 pm #66086pcl1029MemberHi, Eli and everyone,
As both a patient and in the medical field and saw my sis-in-law passed away during the last 5 days of her life with CCA ; talking to her and her husband about treatment from diagnosis to the passage to heaven;,from hospital to hospice care. I can truly understand from both sides of the coin about this disease and saw the limit of what the current medical advance can do for this disease, including clinical trial) .In short it is not that much. I don’t blame the caregiver and I, as a patient, will not encourage it either but should give a clear direction to the caregiver about her/his wishes in the event that the time has come.
Either you are a patient or a caregiver, we have to know about how little we can do,and we have to accept what the outcome will be after trying our best to research,to seek, and make the best judgement base on the findings . In doing so, we we will have no regret. But if we just sit and wait for the ” magic bullet” to come, I am sure it will not arrive sooner that you expected.
I am currently research on the criteria for using “Natural history” of patients as an entry point to speed up the drug development and I will make a list to post on the board ,and when it comes out, please fill it out . This what Marion mentioned before, it is proposed by NIH/FDA and will be accepted as one of the pathway to get patient input and influence for new drug development on efficacy and drug adverse action. And this is one of the way all of you can participate.
Thanks in advance.
God bless.October 28, 2012 at 12:26 am #66085lisacraineSpectatorEli,
Wow, so sad.
LisaOctober 27, 2012 at 11:48 pm #66084lainySpectatorEli, yikes! I take Novolog and NEVER take over 10 – 12 units before each meal. I can’t even imagine 300 units. Then to have our CC linked to that! Too bad, so sad.
