A tip from my oncologist’s nurse when I said I didn’t like the taste of Ensure or the other supplements: Carnation Instant Breakfast. I would make a shake mixing a package with milk, ice cream, and bananas or other fruit. I couldn’t finish a whole one at a time, but it was a great calorie-rich snack I could sip during the day.

I once lost 7 pounds in a day when excess fluid finally passed out of my system. WEIRD!

If he is on IV, then it is very easy to gain and lose weight. When my mom was in the hospital, she was on IV insulin, dextrose and sodium chloride. She was also connected to a urine bag so she did not have to get off her bed to the bathroom. Just from looking at her, I could tell she had water retention in her face, abdomen, arms and legs. I am sure she gained a lot of weight back then. After they removed her tubes and her kidney function back to normal, I could see her swelling going away and I was sure her weight was dropping a lot. But we did not weigh her because she gets too anxious and we dont want to give too much pressure on her.

As someone who lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks and managaed to gain most of it back, try not to worry but keep an eye on it. Hospitals are no place to get better and I always lose weight when there. Try to think of tempting food. When I am ill, foods that are hot or with strong smells are a definite no no so I eat a lot of sandwiches. Try ensure also.

    Take care.

Beth…I agree with Rick. Dave has been through much within the last few days, If possible and if Dave can tolerate it you might want to increase his intake of calory rich foods. And, try to keep track of everything he is eating. His weight should stabalize or, Dave may even gain a bit.
I am sending my best wishes your way,

I wouldn’t fret too much about this considering his recent hospital bout and all of the testing, etc. that he has gone through. I’ve lost a fair amount of weight on several occassions just by being in the hospital, having to fast, or just plain because of poor hospital food.

Give him another week or 2 and see what happens. If it is a consistent lack of appetite, then I would bring it up to the Dr. – otherwise I would chalk it up to his recent thing and hospital stay.

    Best of luck…

    Hey there….it’s me…being VERY worried.

Dave has lost 27 pounds in less than two weeks…read my post before this for an update on what has gone on with him. This amount scares me. What causes this?? Is this normal??
