Just remember, none of us has an expiration date stamped on our foot. Doctors dont know everything…including the will and determination of a patient.Enjoy the time with your mom.

laker….That is incredible….I have never heard of receding jaundice without stent or drain procedure. This cancer has shown again that miracles do occur. Thanks for sharing and tons of good wishes to your Mom.
MarionHi Laker, Just as an FYI, my Dad had a biliary catheter inserted, instead of the stent (if I understand the stent correctly). He could cap it off & Mom would flush it a couple times a day, or when the docs desired, he could have it drain out into a bag. That’s great that you’re appreciating every minute with your Mom, as I’m sure she is with you. You’re Mom is working off of her own timeline, not that of a ‘prognosis’, good for all of you!

TessYes, we really appreciate every day with Mom. I neglected to mention that the specialist was unable to insert a stent when he tried to do the procedure because the mass was too large. A second procedure was then recommended to insert an external tube to drain the liver, but Mom said no. That’s why we don’t know why the jaundice is disappearing.

Wow, nice story. I would take everyday as a gift, and I am sure you and your family is. This is an upredictable cancer that seems to sometimes scare Doctors, and baffle. I do think sometimes as with many cancers, the growth can be slow in an older person. I for one, in you mothers situation, am glad a treatment option wasnt offered, or your family didn’t want to treat the cancer. Keep up the good news.

One of the medications my Mom was given by her oncologist was a liquid drug called Megace. It’s an appetite enhancer and it worked beautifully. She maintained her weight throughout her entire illness. You might ask your Mom’s doctor about it.

Pamlaker….As Jan has mentioned, this cancer is unpredictable and puzzling and in the case of your Mom it couldn’t be a more joyful surprise. Congratulations. If your Mom has a stent then that would explain why the jaundice has almost disappeared. To keep up her weight you might want to probe to see what it is she is would like to eat. It might be something out of the norm but, it might just do the trick.

I think the best reason is that this cancer is so rare that doctors have little understanding of how patients react. My dad is the same age and is 7 months from diagnosis. He was given 6 months to a year. I view the extra time in situations like ours as a gift from God.

Mom at 87 was diagnosed with advanced CC in early March after an ERCP and given a prognosis of 2-4 weeks. It has now been 12 weeks and her only symptoms are weakness, fatigue and loss of appetite. We’re thrilled that she is still with us (doctors aren’t always right!). We’re also amazed that her severe case of jaundice has almost disappeared. How can that be if she hasn’t had any treatment and is on no medication?
