Hi Jim,
Thank you for the information. We actually saw Dr. Daniel Cherqui at NYP when Dan was first diagnosed last year.
I will suggest the cardiologist. (yesterday his heart rate actually dropped to 80).
Stay Healthy!

It’s usually 1.5. He does have nose bleeds often.. His blood pressure is normal.Peony, I have been a cardiac patient for over ten years (I had an emergency CABG [by pass] and mitral valve repair 5/2001) and I know coumadin is a last resort blood thinner, with a lot of potentially dangerous effects. I also have cc. I would suggest having your husband evaluated by a really good cardiologist.
I had a local cardiologist recently suggest coumadin might be appropriate for me for stroke prevention. This cardiologist knows I am unwilling to make any cardio med changes without my dear Dr Sun Hi Lee from NY Presbyterian sprinkling some holy water on the idea. So far, she has rejected several local brainstorms, such as Plavix, etc. and explained why in detail. Dr. Lee has kept me in decent shape for over ten years with 35% of my heart muscle gone and I trust her judgment in cardiac matter without question. She also acted as our “tour guide” in getting the cc diagnosis nailed and surgery lined up.
A good cardiologist could also find out why your husband’s heart rate is so elevated. I won’t even hazard a guess on that one. I wish you well in getting the best possible care for your husband.

Hi Mechwarrior, Welcome to the website. My husband was diagnosed in Oct 2010 with unresectable stage IV CC. Mets to the lungs and spine.

How long has your husband been diagnosed and what stage is he in? Is it resectable or not?
December 1, 2011 at 3:53 am #55219pcl1029MemberHi,
If the doctor prescribed Coumadin for thinning your husband’s blood while on Avastin, most likely it is for atrial fibrillation -A FIB(increase heart rate). About 1% of the patient have this problem while on Avastin. But to make sure, next time you see the doctor, ask him or her for sure.
INR =1.5 is a bit too low for AFIB management, please mention to the doc to see whether this is the INR value 1.5 is appropriate.(INR=2-3 is the normal range);but on the other hand ,hemorrhage is a more frequent side effect than A FIB. So, there is a balance act required to manage the two.
Nose bleed is ok as long as it can be managed ,but if it become heavy and very frequent, then call the doctor to see what they recommend.

May I ask why he takes Coumadin?
Is it for controlling the heart rate or for thrombosis like DVT prophylaxis or other blooding thinning purposes? Did he got his PT/INR lab done to make sure he takes the correct amount or dosage of the Coumadin. What is his inr? Is it between 2-3. And how often he gets his INR DONE.
.Does he has nosebleeds often or rectal bleeding? How his blood pressure?Does he has shortness of breath? All these symptoms may be partially related to the side effects of Avastin an/or oxaliplatin. But I concern the most at this point is why he takes Coumadin and for how long? Coumadin can be used for heart rate problems ,chest pain and stroke , TIA and other heart related problems.
God bless.November 30, 2011 at 1:45 am #55216peonyMemberHi PCL,
He is now on Oxaliplatin, gem, and avastin. No more Zomeda. But he’s also taking coumadin, marinol, prilosec, ducalax, allegra and Albuteral inhaler as needed. He takes some other Otc drugs which escape my memory at the moment. He’s only 48 so he hasn’t really had any health issues other than allergies prior to CC.
Thanks
PNovember 29, 2011 at 11:23 pm #55215pcl1029MemberHi,Peony,
May I ask what meds your husband still on? Is he still on Gem/cis,avastin ,Zomeda? it seems to me that he at times has shortness of breath(as mention on your 10/20/11 entry). Is he taking any meds for other health issues?
God bless.November 29, 2011 at 6:09 pm #5987peonyMemberHi everyone,
My husband heart rate has increased dramatically since his diagnosis and treatment. Where he was once around 60 he is now between 100 to 110.
The onc did not have any explanation and did an EKG but I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience. -
