Hi Jennifer,
This is completely wrong and is totally unacceptabe and you have every right to be this angry. It is time to start kicking up a major fuss as this level of treatment can not go on. Hopefully your mum will make some progress with the onc, but is there anyone else in the hospital that you can make a complaint to?
I hope thtis gets sorted out today and my best wishes to you and your dad.
Gavin
May 19, 2010 at 7:12 am #38115marionsModeratorJennifer….I am furious right along with you. It is time to be a big “squeaky wheel.” Unfortunately, at times, that is what we have to do.
I am thinking of you and am awaiting an update.
MarionMay 19, 2010 at 4:41 am #38114jennifersMemberDad didn’t have his procedure. Not only did he not get it, but they didn’t bother telling him he wasn’t having it until my sister went to the nurses station about it at 5:00 tonight. We are beyond furious and Mom will be talking to HIS oncologist first thing in the morning (not whoever has been coming to see him once a day) and MAKING SURE he starts to get care the needs and deserves.
This is absolutely terrible – he has had amazing care every time he’s been in until now – this time, he is lost in the shuffle as he is on a unit with people that really are sicker then him. They are practically starving him to death. You don’t make a man that weighed MAYBE 130 pounds when he was admitted not eat a thing for 3 days waiting for a procedure. He has VERY obviously lost a consider amount of weight (is nothing but skin and bones), and they’ve even given him so little fluids through IV that it’s another thing that had to be mentioned to have increased. A child couldn’t survive on what they were giving him before something was said. His drain has completely stopped since he’s not eating, and when he finally IS allowed, whatever he eats goes right through the thing. I am so sad, so sick, and so discusted with the lack of care he has received. He was much better off at home as an out-patient. At least at home he was eating. This WILL NOT go on for another day. Will update tomorrow.

Thanks for the update.
MarionMay 18, 2010 at 5:58 pm #38112jennifersMemberHi Everyone,
Glad to know I’m not the only one that wasn’t impressed with him losing his room! The problem is, the only bed they had at the time he was admitted was on a unit full of people that are in dire need of kidney transplants and really are very very sick. They have a room for him now, so he will be much more comfortable. Insurance doesn’t handle anything at all for patients in the hospital here. Alberta Health Care covers any care required for anyone requiring it, including hospital stays and any medications required when in the hospital. I guess since it’s free for us, they assume they can do as they wish? I guess there are problems with all Health Care Systems, and lack of beds is certainly a huge problem here.
Mom just called and told me that he still hasn’t gone in for the procedure, but are still saying that it will be done today. He’s “on the schedule” so hopefully this is true. If it doesn’t, I’m sure Dad will finally be angry enough to voice his concerns, and if not, I know Mom will. I’m not sure if they have spoken with the oncologist today, but I’m sure once they see his levels are how he is feeling and looking, they will be pushing for quicker action.
Thank you all for your comments and feed back – believe me, should anything else happen we will be pushing back… will keep you all updated!!Jen

I agree with the others – this is simply horrible that they can’t get around to helping your Dad and kicked him out of his room. Talk about inefficiencies in health care – If they would have fixed him up as an outpatient last week he would be recovering now and insurance wouldn’t have had to pay for all of the hospital time in the first place!

May 18, 2010 at 4:54 pm #38110darlaSpectatorWow Jennifer,
I have to agree. Speak up and let them know how you feel if your Dad won’t. This is just not right. At one point my husband was scheduled for a Pet and after not eating all day was told it wasn’t going to be done. The next time it was scheduled I made sure I was there and got it done! They never took his bed away tho’. I’m so sorry this happened to him. I hope they get it done today and he begins to improve.Darla
May 18, 2010 at 4:21 pm #38109marionsModeratorOh Jennifer…..they need the bed for someone who is “really sick?” I agree with Lainy, speak with the physician. The treatment your Dad is receiving is disheartening. Calgary patients please, be aware.
Jennifer, look for someone to complain to.
Hang in there,
MarionMay 18, 2010 at 4:14 pm #38108gavinModeratorHi Jennifer,
Sorry to hear about your dad and I sure hope they manage to get this procedure done today. And if I was in your shoes then I would be just as angry that my dad was left out in the hallway. If your dad won’t kick up a fuss about this then maybe you could?
Best wishes to you and your dad,
Gavin
May 18, 2010 at 4:01 pm #38107lainySpectatorYIKES! Gee, Jennifer, Never heard of such a thing, ever! Sure hope you and your dad get some relief quickly!!! Don’t know what else to tell you. Perhaps have a chat with the doctor???
May 18, 2010 at 3:50 pm #38106jennifersMemberStill no news – they were supposed to do the procedure yesterday, so he had to stop eating and drinking Sunday evening… well, they come back at 4:00pm yesterday and tell us it won’t be done. Dad was STARVING! Then they ask him if they can give his bed to a patient who was really sick (since Dad is considered stable), which Dad of course didn’t mind, but now he’s basically in the hallway on a stretcher. He may not mind, but I do!
They made him stop eating very early this morning and say that the procedure will most certainly be done today… it better. He looks just awful – I have NEVER seen anyone so yellow in my life… I’m pretty sure his eyes glow in the dark when the lights are out! He’s also nothing but skin and bones. He bili level was pretty rapidly rising last week and it was at 153 or so on Thursday or Friday… I can’t even imagine what it’s at now. I can’t believe all the side effects of the bili – the new drain will hopefully make him feel a lot better. I guess it’s just a waiting game again today…
Will keep everyone posted.May 17, 2010 at 12:12 pm #38105lalupesSpectatorI’m thinking of you, Jennifer – I hope your dad’s getting the treatment he needs now.
My very best wishes to you both.

May 16, 2010 at 7:35 pm #38104kristinSpectatorOnce they get that drain working properly, he should feel some relief from the bili symptoms very quickly. When they put in my first drain, within 24 hours I was already feeling vastly better, even though that drain (and its successor) were screwed up. The itching dropped by about 90% within a couple of days, though a few weeks later I still have yellow eyes like a space alien!
More good wishes and prayers coming your way from Kentucky–
Kristin
May 16, 2010 at 3:48 pm #38103jennifersMemberHi Lainy,
It sounds like the radiologists don’t do this type of procedure on the weekend which is what the holdup is. It’s ridiculous, but it’s actually the reason his oncologist decided to get him into the hospital – it will actually be looked at and dealt with quicker if he’s an in-patient and taking up a bed that someone else could be in. He should get all his blood work done today and we are REALLY hoping he sees the radiologist tomorrow…. I guess we’ll see. Hopefully he will also been seen by a doctor today that will give him something a bit stronger for his pain.Thank you for the thoughts and prayers – it’s very much appreciated right now!! Will keep everyone updated!

May 16, 2010 at 3:30 pm #38102lainySpectatorJen sending good thoughts and prayers your way…I am squeezing so hard it has to work! One question…can you bring in someone for another opinion?
I don’t understand if his B.R. is rising daily and he is jaundiced why they are not doing something to check out the drain? I am sure its the B.R. /jaundice that is making him confused. If I was to take Teddy in to ER like that he would be administered to immediately. And, if he is in that much pain he needs a little stronger pain pill. Sure sounds like the drain and they had better pull the plug!
Stay strong and cyber hugs going out to you. -
