Amy….I am glad to hear that your Mom is feeling better. I am wondering Amy, who is in charge of your Mom’s illness at Kaiser?

I’m so thankful for your post, mom and I were at the ER and she had her abdomen drained and feels 90% better! It’s the first time in a month she has not been nauseas. Frustrating none of the doctors or advice nurses we spoke to mentioned this? Oh well, I’m thankful you did. Now she can have some relaid for a while I hope:)

    Hi Amy,

Glad to be of help to you. Ascites is a very common side effect and I know that there are many posts here on the website from our members. The search forum function will throw these discussions up should you wish to read more about them. Also, here is a link about ascites that I think will be of use to you as well –

    Dear Amy,

I am sorry to hear what your mum is going through right now and I can so relate to this as my dad had lots of trouble with his nausea. We tried a lot of different meds and combinations of meds to help with that, some with better success than others. One of the problems with my dad is that the meds were not getting the chance to work as he was bringing them up before they could have an effect on him. One that worked quite well for him was Buccastem which he was able to dissolve under his tongue without having to swallow it. And there are suppositories that may be of help to your mum here.

Here is a link regarding nausea etc and I hope that it will be of use to you –

I hope that others will chime in as well with their thoughts on this and please keep us update on your mum. We are all here for you. Have you spoken with your mums doctors about the swelling of her stomach and feet as she could have ascites. And if so, what did they say bout that? My dad had the swelling of his feet, ankles and abdomen due to ascites also.

    Hugs,

    Gavin

    Hi,
If your mom is still on Flagyl and Cipro, you may take them with food or after meals to minimize the side effects of nausea ,dizziness, vomiting and headache.
both drug can cause the above common side effects.

    1. The truth is the nausea from the medications will get betteronce your mom finished the course of antibiotics treatment.
but if your mom will be on chemotherapy then it will be a completely different story. Nausea and vomiting are the most common side effects of MOST if not all the chemo agents; even to the mildest one like Xeloda or gemcitabine or some targeted therapy agent. The metastasis to the stomach may be also a factor too but I am only a patient and not a doctor, and that is just my guess.
    2. The truth is that I saw my-sister-in-law (58 years old ),who had extrahepatic CCA and I can use that example to answer your question; it took just 6months from a still vibrant woman, with no sign of sicknes, who had under chemotherapy for about 9month,took us to dinner and enjoyed our visit together, talking about the good old days about sisterhood etc.with no signs of deterioration to the time she saw God. she only had mets to the omentum at diagnosis and later (within the last 2 months)in the ovaries. I try to answer to your mom’s case more specifically;but I think this will be the best way to do so.
    3. Based on your feeling about quality vs quantity of life , as follows.—
–“The one thing I keep hearing is to encourage her to choose quality of life over quantity. I hate it..I don’t want her to have to choose, she’s so young, happy and full of life with 6 young grandkids who adore her.”—
I will not advise you on this, but to others it may be of great value especially after the event of my sister-in-law’s case.
    God bless.

It’s me again. I have posted several times in the “introductions” area. This truly is the only site I can find that is helpful at all, and where people acytually reply. I am at a loss trying to find help for my mom.
Brief overview. Has advanced, nonresectable gallbladder cancer (up until last week we were always told it was bile duct cancer) that has spread to liver and thousand of mets in her stomach. She has had a hell of time with stents, finally got her 3rd last week and they ended up putting in 3 as the tumor has doubled in size since late February. As of now, she has not began chemo due to all the stent infection/issues. NOW, she is home on flagil and cipro for 10 days to ward of another infection.
Since her last hospital visit 4/27 her stomach is VERY distended, I know this is a sign of the stomach cancer and now her feet are swelling. God, I have so many qustions..she is SO nauseas at all times, she forces herself to eat the tinyst amounts ans still throws up once or twice a day. Is this what happens? How can we help with the nausea? Is the stomach cancer taking over already? Im so confused and dont know where to go for help. She has Kaiser insurance and quit frankly getting anyone to help us without always saying “go to the er” is impossible.
I just want the truth. Is she already starting to decline form the mets in the stomach? Why is she SO sick, nauseas? Will she get feeling better to start chemo? She is absoulutly positive she will do chemo, she has no desire at all to gove up, but not being able to eat and whittling away to nothing is not helping her cause. Is this the normal decline of this cancer? Im lost.
oh, and if you saw my mom youd agree she doesnt even look sick! Even her oncologist was shocked and said he expected to see a sick lady and she looks incredible, not that thats helping:(…
