I have just seen the specialist and they have decided against the ERCP and instead will do an MRCP. I guess the MRI with the contrast is less invasive?? Could be 4-5 week wait but he said we would get to the root cause of my elevated amylase levels. Thanks for all your replies and information. Michelle
Hi,
On this web site not long ago ,may be 6months of so, there was a family that had three brothers have the same disease.You can use the top right hand box here to google “risk factors” and I think it will show up.BTW ,personally I also know someone whose father and one of his brother had diagnosis of CCA along with their father(grandfather ) who was diagnosized having Liver cancer.
Before you read futher; I have just notice you will have an ERCP done;Pleaase at the same time,after the procedure,ask you GI doctor to order also a CAT SCAN WITH CONTRAST for the chest,abdomen and pelvis. This is the BEST chance and the ONLY way you will find out CCA. and it can be used as a base-linefor future worries.
In my opinion,CCA is not that rare anymore especially in the younger generation of the 20-40 years old group;the reason I suspect(I have no proof on this, but purely my observation only)is the fish in the sushi as well as seafood in general especially the frozen one which you cannot find out where they came from ;they may came from far east places like Thailand and the Mei-Kong river delta in Vietnam .
Below are just the most common risk factors that associated with cholangio CA.The most common risk factors for patient in United States and Europe are the inflammatory disease like primary sclerosing cholangitis (25-30%), ulcerative colitis.
Congenital choledochal cysts(this may be related to family history of having CCA disease or liver disease.);as well as Caroli’s disease and congenital hepatic fibrosis also are congenital related risk factors of cholangiocarcinoma.In Asia, and other parts of the world like Middle East, parasitic infections from seafoodmostly, hepatitis B,C infections(Chronic or otherwise), HIV, biliary tract stones diseases(may be included gallbladder stones disease) ; chemical agents like Thorotrast, dioxin, alcohol, early version of oral contraceptive, isoniazid and smoking; age>65(range:20-90’s) ,diabetes and obesity are known risk factors for CCA.

MarionDear Michelle, I think you are entitled to some anxiety about the ERCP. Good news will be that it is perhaps an infection that is raising levels. Other good news is that you seem to have a wonderful Doctor! Best of luck and please let us know!
Doctor just called yesterday and since I have some elevated enzyme levels she has talked to the surgeon and is scheduling me for an ERCP. That way too she says they will look at the whole biliary system and she hopes it will provide some peace of mind for me. Hearing ERCP after all those my mom went through is not really providing me peace of mind right at the moment. It’s hard not to be a little worried with the history and all but I’m sure it will be fine.

hello micky, my husband tom is now 4 half year cancerfree, of this horreble disease.
but his brother has past 13 years ago from cc. you see everyone is different and his other siblings are very healthy. tom only got surgery, and no other treatment, and he is very healthy.now the 5 years mark wil come in oktober, and we are blessed. the docters told us,that tom has 1 year to live,and check us now. but when i was you, i would go every year for a scan, early detection is the best thing to survive this.moontje
Micky, I have read an article on pubmed.com that talked about the increased risk of CC for people who have had gall stones/cholangitis etc. I had cholangitis and had gall bladder removed. I also had ulcerative colitis and had my colon removed. Both conditions put me at increased risk for developing CC.
I would use this info (read up on it) and any other information you can find to get at least annual scans. Catching it as early as possible may be an important key. I certainly wish I had caught this a little earlier.Three years ago my mom passed away after a long battle with this cancer. As one of her main caregivers this site was a blessing and well used. Only four months ago my mom’s sister passed away also diagnosed with bile duct cancer. Both had gallstone problems for years with gallbladder surgery.
Needless to say all of my sisters and I were a little freaked out when my aunt was diagnosed and I find myself even more so as recently its been discovered I have gallstones giving me some problems.
Any thoughts on family history and anyone else have this disease impact more than one in your family? Would appreciate any insight you could provide.
